MENS 5TH XI - 22/09/2018 VS IPSWICH 3 (H)
TEAM: Mens 5th XI
FIXTURE: Mens 5th XI VS 22/09/2018
HEADLINE: Ipswich GK denies City 3 points
LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST
City turned up for their first league game of the season with a strong squad, ready to overturn the 14-1 loss that occurred against the same opponents away last year.
The game started slow, with some poor ball pace and sloppy passes made in midfield areas, which allowed Ipswich some early chances of getting the ball into the D, but that was the best they managed for the majority of the game.
City then picked up the pace, with some good triangles operating in midfield, with Circuit and Cordon dictating play, whilst Hughes and Cooke were working well and switching play across the field from set pieces. The home team was unfortunate not to go ahead before the break as a short corner was awarded as the half-time whistle was blown. Some good skill by Pies at the top of the D got past the first runner, only for his back-post bound pass to be picked out by a defender. Half time.
Some small words of wisdom from new captain Holden (still working on the team talks) and then quickly handed over to Pies who gave some good tactical ideas for the second half.
The home team started the second half strong and put a performance on for the Ladies & Mens 1st XI who remained after their game to support. City kept the momentum for the full 35 minutes, with good attempts on goal from Brine, Circuit, Koppelman and a goal mouth scramble involving Holden, but the England U-21 International in the Ipswich goal kept everything out with a spectacular display of saves.
City were nearly undone in the final 10 minutes, as Ipswich broke forward completely against the run of play, only for a fantastic 1-on-1 save from Grocer to keep them at bay. At this point, Holden was sent to the side of the pitch by the umpire, and to be honest, none of us were quite sure why... hey ho!
Full time - 0-0.
MOTM: Goes to Reuben Cooke - Tireless running and great defending to keep the Ipswich ringer at bay!
