Magpies 8s came expecting to play a kicking back (a field-player allowed to use her feet to stop the ball to take the place of a goalkeeper). However, the umpires informed them that England Hockey rules now state this is no longer allowed. Without a goalie they were forced to play with 11 outfielders.
This proved trickier than expected for City in the first half, with the patterns of play breaking down as the extra Magpies defender blocked attackers attempts on goal.
The game seemed messy and uncomfortably chaotic and City couldn’t quite find their usual rhythm thanks to the overload of outfield Magpies players. Thanks to some powerful hits by their pivot player to young players high up the pitch, Magpies repeatedly gained ground into City’s defensive 25, forcing the home team’s defence to win back the ball safely with no threat towards our amazing Goalie.
Finally, the first City goal arrived. A lovely square ball across the front of goal from Lauren O’Hanlon was deflected in by Liz Hollis and City went into the half time break 1 nil up.
After the break, City settled to play their own game and worked out how to keep the play in the attacking 25 and score. Pressing high and piling yellow shirts into the D, Magpies found it hard to contain the home team. Once they had cracked the defence, City repeatedly found the back of the goal.
Magpies remained in good spirits as City scored goal after goal. Midfield sent ball after ball into the D and a goal each came from Louisa Sizeland, Helen McCall, Lauren O’Hanlon and Emily Winter. Sarah Bird scored two lovely deflections and Liz Hollis scored a further two to complete a hat trick.
Some strong midfield play was appreciated by teammates who voted Esther Hamilton and Emily Winter joint player of the match.
