L (0-2) 11/03/2023 - W5 vs Evergreens 1 (H / L) A GAME OF TWO HALF’S PINK/WHITE |
---|
WOMENS 5TH XI - 11/03/2023 VS EVERGREENS 1 (H) TEAM: Womens 5th XI DATE: 11/03/2023 FIXTURE: Womens 5th XI VS 11/03/2023 HEADLINE: A game of two half’s pink/white LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST (NORTH) VENUE: Norwich city hockey club RESULT:0-2 REPORT: With half the team still in bed an hour before the game, convinced of a frozen pitch, Norwich City 5s took a while to wake up and get into the game. Evergreens didn’t seem to have had the same pre match routine and started well, quickly pressuring the 5s defence. City were able to clear their lines through great tackles and clearances from Sam, Rose, Bev and Millie but Evergreens continued to press, eventually winning a short corner. The colour of the ball meant GK Jo struggled to see the shot so 1-0 Evergreens. A quick ‘discussion’ of ‘new balls please’ and we were stuck with dirty pink (for now). The rest of the first half is best described as frustrating, more for the opposition who despite relentless attacks just couldn’t get past the City midfield/defence/GK. Excellent tracking back from the midfield Chloe, Amy, Sophia and Alice supported the defence to ensure any opportunities were blocked and possession regained for City 5s. Half time and we were feeling optimistic, a team talk from Ali reminding us to use the width and to get 5 at free hits (Rose got a few minutes rest on the bench in the first half) and we were all set for the second half until……the pink ball was back. Captain Amy stopped the game and reminded the umpire of the agreement for a white ball in the 2nd half. Evergreens denied any knowledge of this - VAR!!! Amy kept a calm head (while others around her did not) and finally the colour of the ball was decided by a coin toss (yes this actually happened) Amy was victorious and white is was. We felt like we had won the game. The second half (or white half) could finally get started. The second half was much more even, Evergreens continued to press, winning a number of short corners, the defence stayed strong, with some great saves by Jo and stops by Rose and Sam until finally a great strike from the top of the circle snuck in on the left post. 2-0 Evergreens. A good spell for City followed with great runs down the line from Alice, Esme and Fran and excellent work in the middle from Anna which won us a couple of short corners. Our best chances of the game came from these and Evergreens had to scramble to clear the goal line. Final score 2-0, we may have lost the game but we won the ball colour coin toss!

Dragons started strong and pressed hard in our half and put us under pressure, defenders Alli, Jess, Sam, Millie and Emma stayed strong, Chloe distributed some great balls out to the wing, picked up by Bev, connecting well with Anna and Alice Hood. Great to have Marie back who played some great balls onto the forwards. Half time talk by coach Ali, we came out strong and pushed up more. Sophie winning some great tackles, Alice B doing some great runs, Rose was strong on the left and had a shot on goal, saved by the keeper. The opposition continued to challenge our defence, City didn’t give up, defending short corners well, Amelie did great job running number 1, Alli great save off the line and POTM Jo Di-Corpo was kept busy. City stayed strong continued to push but Dragon’s perseverance paid off, passing the ball about the D and slotting it past us into the back of the net. L (1-2) 11/02/2023 - W5 vs Yarmouth 1 (H / L) AN UNLUCKY LOSS FOR CITY |
---|
WOMENS 5TH XI - 11/02/2023 VS YARMOUTH 1 (H) TEAM: Womens 5th XI DATE: 11/02/2023 FIXTURE: Womens 5th XI VS 11/02/2023 HEADLINE: An unlucky loss for City LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST (NORTH) VENUE: Home RESULT: Yarmouth 2 - 1 City REPORT: Norwich City Womens 5’s were hoping for a stronger show after a heavy defeat away to Yarmouth Womens 1’s earlier in the season. Norwich started with confidence and worked hard to stifle a few early attacks from Yarmouth. The two teams were evenly matched. Unfortunately, Yarmouth eventually scored from a clinical short corner and the first half ended 0 - 1 to Yarmouth. The team continued to work well together in the second half with Rose, Alice and Sophie combining well together on the wing to create some promising attacks. In midfield, Amy and Sofia linked quickly to push forward and Corinne worked tirelessly to find space and create options going forward. The defence continued to be challenged and they worked strongly to prevent Yarmouth racking up more, Alli was pivotal and made some strong clearances, Amelie and Millie were quick and reliable with their tackles. But Yarmouth were able to find the back of the net for a second time. Norwich did not let this dampen their spirits and were able to cinch one back from a short corner combination between Alice and Chloe, with Chloe scoring. Norwich continued to battle hard and there were a couple more opportunities in Yarmouth’s D where there was a glimmer of achieving a draw. Yarmouth thought they had made it 3-1 later in the second half with an impressive high shot that looked to be a dead cert, but Emma made the save of the day if not the save of the year (sorry Jo!) and managed to deflect it in the air to keep the margin to 1. The match ended in a 1-2 win for Yarmouth. Norwich battled hard against a strong Yarmouth team and can be proud of today’s performance, it’s fair to say that they achieved their stronger show.

D (1-1) 04/02/2023 - W5 vs University of East Anglia 3 (A / L) A WELL BATTLED MATCH. |
---|
WOMENS 5TH XI - 04/02/2023 VS UNIVERSITY OF EAST ANGLIA 3 (A) TEAM: Womens 5th XI DATE: 04/02/2023 FIXTURE: Womens 5th XI VS 04/02/2023 HEADLINE: A well battled match. LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST (NORTH) VENUE: UEA RESULT: 1-1 Draw REPORT: Norwich City 5s arrived at UEA on Saturday with a flutter of hope in our hearts that we might get a win this week. After a crushing defeat against bottom of the table last week, it was possible to see that we had lost some of our usual mojo before we even stepped onto the pitch. Needless to say, our amazing captains Chloe Green and Amy Corden had a rallying pre-match pep talk prepared for us and some of our old spark was ignited again. With several key players out through injury and ski holidays (only slightly jealous) we found ourselves with a mix of new players to make up our squad. Thanks to Ellie Alderton for helping us out this week and for her tactical advice for our game. Amazing congratulations to Corinne Lawrie who played her first match for the club and had a great game. We can see already that she is a excellent player; turning well with the ball; executing some fab tackles and speedy runs into space. The addition of the Brown twins also really strengthened us in the first half and they had a great game for the 5s. Alice Brown took some casual and graceful touches in the D in the first half. And Millie Brown worked really hard to stop UEA forwards getting through our defence. Millie's tackles were effortlessly clean and she cleared the ball well. Apologies for the constant barrage of instructions Millie, I get a bit over excited! Even with the addition of these great players we found ourselves under a constant barrage of attack from UEA 3s. A nippy forward caused us all sorts of trouble as she broke through several times in the first half. Putting defenders Emma Guyton, Annette Peters, Allison McLellan and keeper Jo Di-Corpo under pressure time and time again. Annette had a great debut in a left half position, clearly a position she can take up again as she never missed a beat. Despite the constant attack from UEA, our defenders all did an incredible job keeping them out. Ali with her brutal clearances; unbeatable tackles and determination kept the goal line clear. Whilst Esme Abbott's lightning runs out for short corners kept UEA's shots from having an effect. Esme's speed and reactions here have saved us time and time again in match situations. She is a gazelle with no fear! Jo, our nimble and super efficient keeper won several votes for POTM again this week for her lightning reflexes and incredible saves keeping us at nil nil till half time. Our half time team talk was mainly tactical advice from Chloe Green, who could see where we weren't playing our best game. Chloe has a great eye for where things need to improve and we set out for the second half with a renewed sense in our ability. This half saw a much more aggressive attacking side from the City 5s: Amy Corden, Beverley Cushion, Sharon Phillips and Sofia Hancy strung together some excellent passes, using Chloe to pivot across the pitch and out to the halves effectively. We appeared to have the upper hand this 35 but were still unable to score which proved to be frustrating. Then the unimaginable happened! A sneak attack that didn't look very dangerous at the time from UEA ended with a goal against us. UEA were exalted and deservedly so! They had fought hard this far and it wasn't undeserved. We took a moment to bang our sticks in frustration in the goal mouth and then we shook it off and started again. We were NOT going to lose this match! Soon enough one of Esme's attacks led to her winning a short corner in the opposition's D. We set up and Ellie smacked a beautiful shot from the top which ricocheted- with force- off a defender and their keeper to find the backboard with a very satisfying thwack. We celebrated like we had won the league much to the amusement of anyone watching! With only about 3 minutes left it was disappointing not to be able to use this momentum to our advantage but a draw and one point wasn't the worst outcome. As a team we all commented that the umpires at UEA were extremely good and fair which made it an enjoyable game to play. So thank you to both of them. POTM Emma Guyton, although I believe it was just a conspiracy to get me to write the match report. Well played everyone!

We ended the first half 1 goal down and thought we could get back into the game. Unfortunately we conceded 2 more goals early in the second half making it a mountain to climb. Something just didn’t click for the womens 5’s today although we did battle to the very end and managed to get a goal from Amy Corden assisted by Rose Byrne. Everyone worked so hard and we had some great moments of hockey. Jess Turnnard save a few on the line, Jo did a cracking job keeping it just 3 goals. All our defenders keep fighting Netty, Alli, Jess, Rose and Emma. And when we did attack and break through Carrow. The fabulous forward line Sharon, Alice,Thalia Esme, looked great. Midfield where tireless in their efforts Chloe, Amy, Fran and Sofia. Player of match Chloe Green

It was a slow start for city who found it difficult to make a way past the Broadland press. Goalkeeper Jo had an incredible game with multiple saves however, city went 0-1 down at half time. After an intense team talk at half term from the co-captains (Amy and Chloe )city went out in the second half hungry for a goal to level out the score. A special mention goes to Esme for her runs down the sidelines, creating several close chances for City. City’s confidence was boosted and after some great link-up play, especially in the midfield, they scored a much-deserved goal. Unfortunately, city’s intensity was not maintained. After a few decisions which did not go our way, a counterattack from Broadlands meant our defence were outnumbered and put Broadlands ahead 2-1. The final score was 2-1 to Broadlands. However, the score did not reflect the game because city had the majority of possession and were unfortunate not to score another goal. Bring on Dragons next Saturday.

D (2-2) 07/01/2023 - W5 vs Norwich CIty 4 (A / L) INTER-CLUB NEW YEAR DRAW |

WOMENS 5TH XI - 07/01/2023 VS NORWICH CITY 4 (A) TEAM: Womens 5th XI DATE: 07/01/2023 FIXTURE: Womens 5th XI VS 07/01/2023 HEADLINE: Inter-club new year draw LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST (NORTH) VENUE:TRF RESULT:2:2 REPORT: Everyone was very excited to get back to playing hockey after the Christmas break with the added bonus of this being a rearranged inter-club match. It is always nice to know everyone on the pitch. Both teams started with great energy & it wasn't long before the 4's got the first goal which was an Emily Winter special ( you can't do much about those!) However the 5's battled on & were rewarded just before half time with a cross from the right side of the D by Maddie Smith which was slotted away nicely into the left side of the goal by Esme Abbott. After a bit of a breather and a motivating team talk from Ali McLellan, who we missed in defence as she was unwell, the 5's went back out fired-up for the second half. The 4's continued to pressurise in the D & they were awarded a few short corners which Jo Di-Corpo managed to keep out of the goal until Olivia Broadway fired in a great mid-air shot to give the 4's the lead. The 4's continued to make some great runs up the centre of the pitch but the defence of Emma Guyton, Nettie Peters, Jess Tunnard & Sophia Molineux worked tirelessly to fend them off & the midfield of Rose Byrne, Chloe Green, Jane Loughridge & Marie Hood ran their socks off intercepting & making some chances for the 5's Amy Corden, Sophia Hancy, Olivia Marjoram & Alice Hood made some great runs up & down the wings & Sharon Phillips eventually broke through on the left hand side of the pitch on her own taking the ball into the D but couldn't get a clear shot on goal past the 4's defence. It seemed like the score was going the 4's way when Marie Hood found some inner strength to power through the 4's defence just before full time & hammer the equaliser home in a match which was played in great Norwich City spirit & seemed to be enjoyed by all.

WOMENS 5TH XI - 26/11/2022 VS DEREHAM 2 (H) TEAM: Womens 5th XI DATE: 26/11/2022 FIXTURE: Womens 5th XI VS 26/11/2022 HEADLINE: A brutal onslaught LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST (NORTH) VENUE:TRF RESULT:L0-8 REPORT: After a rousing pre-match speech from our fabulous captain Amy Hinchliffe; City 5s took to the pitch for a slightly delayed pushback. From the outset, we knew we were in for a tough game against Dereham 2s who are near the top of our league. Our aim was to keep the score line below double figures. Dereham 2s, a well drilled and resourceful side, intercepted our passes early and pushed hard into our half. As in previous weeks, we were on the defensive foot within minutes. An early goal conceded set the tone for the match as defenders: Emma Guyton, Karen Hobden, Allison McLellan and Annette Peters found themselves fighting a heroic but relentless onslaught in the D. Excellent tackles from Alli and Karen gave our hard working keeper Jo Di-Corpo breathing space for a few minutes. Finally, our awesome midfield players were allowed a look in, Sofia Hancy used her roll outs effectively to get herself out of trouble on numerous occasions, bouncing balls to our co-captain Chloe Green. Chloe's strength and ball possession keep us in the game briefly before Dereham turned the ball over and responded to our 'glimmer of hope' of getting out of our half with a second goal. Fresh legs in the form of Rose Byrne and Amy Hinchliffe allow us to fight back again. Rose times her tackles well and always applies pressure to the player she is marking forcing Dereham to make a brief mistake and allowing Jane Loughridge and Esme Abbott to break through and make a run for goal. Esme, whose speed allows her to outpace her opposition, found that despite getting ahead, Dereham defence were quick to react and surround her. Two more goals were our punishment for trying to break through Dereham's unbreakable line, even the lightning reflex's of Jo weren't enough to stop several skillful attackers taking advantage of gaps in our marking and hammering goals home. At this point Dereham's keeper sits on her backboard ;) Half time score 5-0 to Dereham. City are not at all disheartened by the score line during their half time chat. Excellent advice from Ellie Alderton and Alistair Wardale at half time allow us to restructure and re-group for our second half. We came out firing and finally break into Dereham's D earning ourselves a short corner and finally a strong chance on goal. Ellie takes a lovely strike which is deflected by a Dereham player. Beverley Cushion comes into her element, fighting for every ball whilst it was in Dereham's half, even finding a pass that was 'on' from her position on the floor. It just was not to be today though, Dereham broke through again, their skillful attackers taking barely a touch to ping the ball round our D resulting in another impressive deflection goal. In our determination to keep the score line below double figures we dug deep and fought tooth and nail for every ball. After a couple of amazing saves again by Jo, the final whistle went with a final score of 8-0 to Dereham. City 5s however are not at all downhearted by this result, we all played out hearts out and were beaten by a stronger Dereham side. As the underdogs in this league, we are extremely pleased if we play well and enjoy our game which we certainly did today. POTM Emma Guyton.

The opposition started very quick & strong and were straight in our D putting the defence under pressure. Only 3 minutes in and they were awarded a penalty flick, the keeper made a great save. The first half Emma, Alli, Netty, Jess and keeper Jo defended so many short corners, but they finally scored from a deflection from a short corner at 32mins. Half time talk by Marie, we had more possession in the 2nd half and had some great runs. Evergreens were intent to keep up the pressure, more short corners defended brilliantly, they kept pressing and had a quick break from the half way line and a strong finish and scored their 2nd goal. Fast action match, great play by both teams, neither giving up. Missing some of our usual players this week, Olivia joined us and had a great debut game. POTM Jo Di-Corpo

Dragons were quick paced and well practiced, but City pushed back hard clearing the ball and keeping the score line equal. After what could have been 6 short corners, or 600, and lots of imaginative defending, dragons finally managed to tap one over the line on the right post making them one up. City didn’t let this dampen their spirits and a good run of passes through the middle from great runners Chloe and Marie, and Sophia and Amy higher up finally saw the ball push up towards the opposing d. A great play between Marie and Alice hood saw the ball finally get into the goal levelling the score sheet at the 12 minute mark. The game continued in this spirit with a tiring city continuing to block dragons in any way they could. As the outfield players tired goalkeeper Jo made some amazing saves on and off the line, ensuring that we finished the game as a draw, and a well deserved one at that! Onwards and upwards! Player of match was Jess Turnnard

Midfield players Marie, Chloe, Sofia and Frankie worked tirelessly to help defend and drive the ball out. The skill and reverse aerial strikes were hard to stop the ball hitting the back of the net and the score at half time was 7-0. After a team talk from Nathan and shift of positions, we came out much stronger and on the attack, a great drive down the right hand side by Marie and into the D, a pass to Esme who then slipped it left to Amy who was awaiting on the far post and slotted it in past the keeper. Some more great runs from Victoria, Amy, Frankie, Esme and Chloe but no more goals for City. Broadland kept up the pressure and kept the defence and POTM keeper Jo busy. Final score 9-1, could have been much higher, but the great teamwork and tireless efforts from everyone kept the score in single digits. Big thanks to Frankie and Victoria helping us out this week and Nathan we couldn’t have done it without you, thank you.

LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST (NORTH) VENUE: cliff park academy RESULT:0-11 REPORT: Norwich City 5’s vs Yarmouth 1’s In a match city will be keen to forget, we were outplayed by a strong and organised Yarmouth team. Without our regular team, City made a slow start, giving the opposition too much time on the ball and they dominated possession and took their many chances. With nothing to lose, City started the second half brighter, Chloe linking up well with Sophia and Rose on the right, but we were unable to advance into the attacking D. Our defensive line worked tirelessly but were constantly under pressure. It was a test of character that the team dug deep and limited Yarmouths chances, even creating a couple of chances in front of goal in the latter minutes of the game. A tough game… Onwards and upwards next week! Player of match Marie Hood

WOMENS 5TH XI - 15/10/2022 VS UNIVERSITY OF EAST ANGLIA 3 (H) TEAM: Womens 5th XI DATE: 15/10/2022 FIXTURE: Womens 5th XI VS 15/10/2022 HEADLINE: A fantastic win for City 5s REPORT: LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST (NORTH) VENUE: TRF RESULT: 5-0 Win! REPORT: After our accidental promotion to Div 3, City 5s have been fighting tooth and nail each week for points! We are certainly not lacking in team spirit and with our amazing captains, Amy Corden and Chloe Green and our match day coach Marie Hood we are always fired up and raring to go! This week was no exception! With UEA 3s currently towards the bottom of the table and after beating them both times we met last season we knew we had a fighting chance this week and the 3 points were on the table for the taking. City side started off strong from the outset with Marie Hood and Chloe Green dominating the midfield posession and feeding excellent balls out to Alice Hood, Esme Abbott, Lottie Hood, Amy Corden and Jane Loughridge. It wasn't long before this dominance led to Marie scoring city's first goal at 18mins after some nifty changing of direction which forced fouls from her opposition. With excellent ball distribution from Bev Cushion and Rose Byrne down the left hand side we had several more chances to score and finally we did with a beautiful assist from Marie Hood at the top of the D through to a graceful tap in from Amy Corden on the left post. It was like watching in slow motion it was so beautiful! Our two youngsters Alice Hood and Lottie Hood used their super speed and nifty skills to make some excellent tackles and attempts on goal. A strike from Alice on the far right was converted by Esme Abbott just before half time taking our score to 3-0. After half time UEA certainly came out with more fight and made several attempts themselves on our D which allowed Annette Peters and Jo Di-Corpo to briefly get involved in the game. Netty cool and calm in defence didn't allow a single player past her as she took over in a pivotal sweeper role this match. Jo's one on one shuffle at the top of the D in her pads was successful as well and she incredibly kept the score sheet against us blank! Sofia Hancy was as usual making excellent rolls outs and runs across the pitch at lightning speed which allowed us to break through UEA defence again and again. This time support by Rose who played a higher position this week and even had an attempt on goal herself! Towards the end of the second half there were a few tired passes from both sides but our team spirit and determination won through for us time and time again as we maintained possession and kept attacking the opposition D. Bev's well timed and brutally accurate tackles allowed for quick turn overs and great use of space for more City attack. Another amazing goal from Esme Abbott came 13 minutes into the second half. Esme who is new to the team this season has certainly taken the challenges of a new team and new league into her long, super quick stride as she out paces and out meanouves her opponents. Out final goal of the match was scored from an effortless strike at the top of the D from Marie who again had an absolute blinder of a match. After such an intensive and well worked game from everyone it was a very well deserved comfortable win for City 5s. POTM was Emma Guyton who finally got her mojo back this week! Thanks for an amazing game everyone!

LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST (NORTH) VENUE: Carrow- Langley RESULT: lost 1-0 REPORT: City turned up to Langley in good spirits ahead of the game with Carrow; though fielding only 12 and nursing a few poorly players. Despite this city played their hearts out conceding only one goal in the first half from a lucky ball that was pushed over the line from a close range battle. City didnt let this get them down, keeping up a strong attack for the rest of the half and then till the end of the game. There was great teamwork from all, a few close calls on short corners that we just weren't quite able to convert and generally a real passion shown by all, especially in the final minutes to try and draw equal. A close fought battle between the two sides and overall a great game for city, in which the score certainly didn't reflect the game we played at all. Player of the match went to a well deserved Sam Harvey for some excellent defending throughout the match!

WOMENS 5TH XI - 01/10/2022 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 4 (H) TEAM: Womens 5th XI DATE: 01/10/2022 FIXTURE: Womens 5th XI VS 01/10/2022 HEADLINE: Norwich city womens 5’s Vs Norwich dragons 4’s LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST NORTH VENUE:Taverham hockey club RESULT:0-1 REPORT: City 5’s v Dragons 4’s Staring with a new formation, city were on the back foot from the start against a well organised Dragons side. Our defensive team of Ali, Netty and Emma stood strong and we weathered an early onslaught of short corners. The only goal of the half came from a turnover and quick break from Dragons which was the only time they caught us unaware and converted an overload chance. Some wise words from Ali at half time and we started the second half brightly, Chloe and Marie linking up well in the middle and Esme and Sophia exploiting the wide channels. Unfortunately we were unable to take our chances in attack, and Jo made some great reaction saves to keep us in it at the back but the score ended 0-1. There are many positives to take from the game and this side showed real spirit and work rate throughout. Bring on next week! Player of match Marie Hood
