WOMENS 2ND XI - 12/12/2020 VS BROADLAND 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 2nd XI DATE: 12/12/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 2nd XI VS 12/12/2020 HEADLINE: A Tale of Two Halves LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: TRF RESULT: 2-1 Loss REPORT: After a disappointing loss last week this Saturday we took on Broadlands 1’s more determined than ever. With COVID and key workers having to work we were sadly missing a few key players. After a classic Emily Francis warm up we were all ready to go! It would be fair to say that the first half did not go our way with Broadland taking their opportunities in front of goal and going 2-0 up. At half time we had a stern talking to from the coach Chris Wardale and captain Leigh-Ann Worrall and we all knew that we needed to up the pace and put the pressure on. For the full 35 mins we piled on the pressure with the majority of the play being at the Broadland goal. Finally, a well earned short corner saw Emily place the ball across goal and Mia Moore push the ball across the line. We continued to have our chances at goal but unfortunately after many short corners and great goal keeping from Broadland we were unable to get any reward and saw the game finish 2-1. With one more game against top of the league before Christmas we will continue to fight for those wins! POTM: Georgia Cleveland

We had a lot of possession in the first half leading to two amazing goals from Niamh Campbell. However, the opposition were awarded three short corners in a row, and unfortunately resulted in a goal. Which left us at 2:1 for half time. After half time we set off strong again, with amazing defensive performances from Hannah Nunn and Leigh-Ann Worrall, however the opposition were able to capitalise on us and score two more goals bringing us to 2:3. With 5 minutes to go the womens worked incredibly hard to score another super goal from Rosie Humphrey. However, this was followed by an opposing goal leading to the final score of 4:3. It was very unfortunate to come away with a loss after all the womens had worked very hard in the game, but it was really great to see everyone playing hockey again! POTM: Milly Hyatt

We knew it was to be a tough game with the league table proving tight towards the top and it didn’t disappoint. The first five minutes was end to end, with some chances arising for both teams, City struggled to find their usual rhythm but kept the energetic and well drilled Harleston side at bay. That was until a quick and mazy run from a forward resulted in Harleston taking the lead. Shortly followed by a second goal. Tapin’s half time Team talk gee’d us up and within a few minutes the of end to end play the score was 3-1 following a powerful short corner shot from Milly Brown being deflected into the goal in style by Helen Busfield. Sadly the Harleston team challenged for every ball and pressed high and strong and two more goals came for them. Ending the game 5-1. It wasn’t meant to be this week, but when we take them in the return leg we’ll be determined to grab those 3 points. POTM Emily Francis

WOMENS 2ND XI - 24/10/2020 VS NORWICH CITY 3 (A) TEAM: Womens 2nd XI DATE: 24/10/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 2nd XI VS 24/10/2020 HEADLINE: 2s Come Out on Top in Interclub Battle LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: TRF RESULT: 1-3 Win REPORT: Entering the game with a reduced squad, City 2s started the game well, dominating possession and creating multiple chances within the first 10 minutes. The strong press and early persistence, allowed City 2s to win an short corner, which was converted by Amelie Thomas after a smart decision by captain Leigh-Ann Worrall to slip left. Good chances came for both sides and City 3’s converted a shot from the top of the “D” to bring the score level. The 2’s kept their heads held high and after some good midfield battles and smart attacking play, the 2s soon regained their advantage with in form Rosie Humphrey scoring from a broken down short corner. After some strong words at half time, the 2’s started the second half well, with Georgia Cleveland, Sally Rose and Ellie Hobden working tirelessly in the midfield. Despite winning multiple short corners and creating several chances, the 2s struggled to convert and add to their lead. Sally Rose, Mia Moore and Mia Edmond found themselves in some great positions and Kate Houldey had a lovely reverse shot at the top of the “D” but the 2’s remained unable to extend their winning position. Entering into the last five minutes, City 2’s broke down play in the middle of the pitch allowing Milly Brown to thread a ball through to Rosie Humphrey who confidentially placed the ball into the right corner of the goal. After some smart game management by City 2’s to run down the final minutes of the game, the final score ended 1-3. A well deserved and hard fought victory for the 2’s. Special mention to Sabina Baker, Mia Edmond and Amelie Thomas who all stepped up to play for the 2’s today and who all had great individual performances. POTM: Milly Brown

W (7-3) 17/10/2020 - W2 vs Norwich Dragons 3 (H / L) FLICK, FLICK, FLICKS! |

WOMENS 2ND XI - 17/10/2020 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 3 (H) TEAM: Womens 2nd XI DATE: 17/10/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 2nd XI VS 17/10/2020 HEADLINE: Flick, flick, flicks! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: TRF RESULT: 7-3 Win REPORT: City began their mission today with a good structured warm up in the sunshine. Led by their very own warm-up guru Emily Francis who not only engaged City’s glutes but got them fired up for the game ahead. City started the game with a high press from forwards Milly Brown, Emma Hewitt and Rosie Humphrey, making a nuisance of themselves within Dragons’ defence, setting the tone. This allowed them to penetrate Dragons’ ‘D’ early which soon paid off as Rosie was awarded a penalty flick, she slotted it past the keeper to take City ahead, 1-0. City continued to put Dragons’ defence under pressure leading to another penalty flick being awarded! This time, Emily Francis stepped up who powerfully placed it in the bottom corner, 2-0. Dragons were able to turn the ball over quickly and weave through yellow and green shirts to get themselves on the score sheet before half-time, 2-1. Some words of wisdom from coach Chris Wardale encouraged City to go into the second half with much more determination than the first, as Dragons had ample time to get back in the game. Shortly after the restart, this is exactly what happened with an equaliser from a conceded short corner, 2-2. Working tirelessly in City’s Midfield, Emily Francis went into every 50/50 situation wanting to come out on top, linking nicely with Kate Houldey and centre half Georgia Cleveland who, as always, distributed the ball well out to half backs Helen Busfield and Sally Rose who were making dangerous runs up each wing. The ball fell to Rosie Humphrey who drove the baseline and pulled it back to Emma Hewitt who tousled with a defender in front of the keeper, converting City’s third, 3-2. Dragons were not prepared to give up just yet and shortly after equalised again, 3-3. City were NOT leaving the pitch empty handed. Captain Leigh-Ann Worrall and Hannah Nunn were bossing it in defence cutting out Dragons’ routes to goal. Helen Busfield upped the tempo, her teammates followed suit with some silky skills from Niamh Campbell, smart running from Mia Moore, great creative play from Ellie Hobden and with Sally Rose finding herself in acres of space penetrating the D saw a flurry of goals come from City within the last 10 minutes. Helen Busfield made it 5-3 with two effortless goals. A purposeful foul on Milly Brown allowed City to be awarded a third flick. Rosie Humphrey stepped up and calmly placed it in the bottom corner to make it 6-3. City were awarded a final short corner of the game which saw Hannah Nunn rattle the backboard, 7-3. Well done to all who played today including Sophie Turner on her return. It just shows with strength, determination and team spirit anything is possible. 💛💚 POTM: Rosie Humphrey

LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: Ipswich School Sports Centre RESULT: 0-3 Win REPORT: Norwich city 2s arrived in a damp and grey Ipswich, ready to build on their win from the previous week and beat Framlingham. The whistle blew and City came out of the blocks all guns blazing. Some quick sharp passing led to the ball being crossed from the right into the D, where Helen Busfield fired the ball into the goal within the first 5 minutes. City remained confident and strong midfield play from Georgia Cleveland, Niamh Campbell, Emily Francis and Helen Busfield meant that City dominated the half. City came close several times during the first half, however were denied a number of short corners and the half ended 0-1 City returned to the pitch after a rousing half time talk from Captain Leigh-Ann Worrall who asked for more goals, composure and good discipline. Framingham came out fighting and had a few attacks which the defence of Ellie Hobden, Leigh-Ann Worrall, Frankie Birkenhead, Sally Rose and Hannah Nunn dealt with cool heads, turned the ball over and started more City attacks. City spent the majority of the second half in the attacking half, with several players coming close to putting the ball in the back of the net including Milly Brown, Rosie Humphrey and Emma Hewitt all narrowly missing the goal. Niamh Campbell also came close but was denied by the body of a Framlingham defender. The continued pressure paid off and after some silky skills from Niamh who had run circles around her player all game slipped the ball to Helen Busfield who muscled her way to be first to the ball and slotted the ball into the left corner of the goal for her second of the match. City pushed forward again and this led to several short corners. A well worked short corner led to Hannah Nunn sweeping the ball into the corner of the goal, getting her name on the team sheet for the first time in city colours. Shout out to Milly Hyatt for keeping a clean sheet in goal! POTM: Hannah Nunn

W (2-1) 03/10/2020 - W2 vs Bury St Edmunds 2 (H / L) SHEER DETERMINATION... |

WOMENS 2ND XI - 03/10/2020 VS BURY ST EDMUNDS 2 (H) TEAM: Womens 2nd XI DATE: 03/10/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 2nd XI VS 03/10/2020 HEADLINE: Sheer determination... LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: TRF RESULT: 2-1 REPORT: A damp and drizzly Saturday morning saw City gather for their second league game of the season. Having played Bury in a friendly a few weeks earlier everyone was confident that this would be the first three points of the season. After a great warm up routine again from Emily they headed out… For some reason it was not the most positive start for City. Bury managed to upset City’s flow and prevented them from settling into their usual confident pattern of play, putting them under pressure to make some possession mistakes from early on. It took a while for City to get themselves organised and whilst Bury never overly threatened the defence or keeper there were a few moments that could have seen Bury score but with Millie making some decisive saves, they soaked up the pressure. As City started to get their act together, strong defensive play, turnovers in the midfield and the forward line starting to gel, it saw them start to put Bury under pressure. Several short corners were awarded but they were unable to convert until a change in routine; with a left slip and a perfectly timed, slick shot from Helen, the ball sliced into the bottom right corner of the goal, the keeper just didn’t see it coming. A positive boost to a shaky start. The half time talk was good but the advice was not initially heeded. Knowing that Bury would come out fighting hard to pull things back again City still seemed a bit unsure of themselves allowing Bury to have more of the ball than they deserved. Whilst the defence stood firm for the majority of the play, a momentary loss of composure allowed Bury to come back into the game. They penetrated the D and after an initial save from Millie, the follow up shot coupled with an unlucky bounce and deflection saw them pull it back to 1-1. Bury’s goal only served to fuel City’s determination more than ever to not lose this game and they dug deep into their reserves to close down Bury at every opportunity. The defence held strong stopping Bury from using the wings and after some scrappy tussles in the midfield City started to use their strength and fitness to create some lovely passages of play continually pushing Bury back into their 23. Bury loaded their defence and City were unable to finish several of the chances they had to score but they never gave up and their determination continuously tested the Bury keeper. Constant pressure from City’s forwards paid off when a rebounded shot on goal from Emily, was in no uncertain terms followed up by Helen who smashed it into the goal. With a 2-1 lead and not much time to go it was now up to City to tactically control the game and not allow Bury to play; urgency slowed, possession and tactics stepped in with Niamh and Emma successfully ‘playing’ the corners as the time counted down. Whilst perhaps not the prettiest way to finish a game, it served a purpose and at the end of the day a win is a win! So, City secured their first three points of the season though sheer determination to never give up, to work through all their mistakes and to endlessly support each other whatever. A great team effort.

WOMENS 2ND XI - 26/09/2020 VS COLCHESTER 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 2nd XI DATE: 26/09/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 2nd XI VS 26/09/2020 HEADLINE: Unlucky Loss For Determined 2s LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: Colchester RESULT: 3-2 Loss REPORT: The game began with high positivity and a desire to win, to start the season off right. We were determined for the three points and this showed by the confidence and pressure we put on Colchester within the first 15 mins. After a few good shots at goal, we managed to score from a long slap across from Frankie Birkenhead and a quick deflection from Rosie Humphrey, leaving our heads high and prepared for a fight. After several confusing decisions, Colchester had equalised with us, however we still kept pushing and put them under pressure. We came back fighting in the second half, and scored again from a short corner with textbook execution from Rosie Humphrey once again. Unfortunately, the lack of subs got the best of us and allowed Colchester to equalise with a second goal. We attempted a last push, trying to cut out their best player and kept our defence strong with a few beautiful balls from Milly Brown across the pitch to put pressure on the goalkeeper, but we still weren’t able to score another. Within the last few minutes of the match, Colchester were awarded a penalty flick which they converted, leaving the team disappointed with a 3-2 loss. We look to push hard and show our dominance in this league, and although it was a step back, we will come to next Saturday with the same intensity and drive. Well played girls. POTM Ellie Hobden

The Womens started well and opened the scoring from a Helen Busfield penalty corner strike. Despite creating further chances the scoreline remained 1-0 at the break. City were pegged back into the second following some good play from the away side which mean Zara Howes equalized with a strike from the top of the D. With the game in the balance Helen Busfield scored her and City's second which turned out to be enough to seal our a 2-1 victory.

The match started well with the ball building from the back line, through the midfield and to the forwards. We attacked various angles of the D and looked to goal scoring opportunities. City won a short corner, the ball was hit from the top of the D to Mia Moore who dinked it over the line after a tussle with the keeper. The score at half time was 1-0 After the team talk we focused more on transferring the ball across the pitch and changing the channel of play. This was executed well by Dani Sizer making excellent runs down the sideline to widen play. The second goal from City came from Milly Brown who drove the baseline and cut it back to the P spot where Rosie Humphrey found the back of the net. Good defensive work from Sally Rose stopped Dragons attacking the left side line and excellent passes were made to Georgia Cleveland and Niamh Cambell allowing them to build on play. Dragons made a break and tired City players couldn’t keep up. Molly Gromett made a save as it was struck on the top of the D but rebounded and went into the back of the net from a Dragons player. Player of the match was Molly Gromett who made some excellent saves throughout the match. Final score 2-2.

WOMENS 2ND XI - 12/09/2020 VS BURY ST EDMUNDS 2 (H) TEAM: Womens 2nd XI DATE: 12/09/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 2nd XI VS 12/09/2020 HEADLINE: Another Exciting Match FRIENDLY VENUE: TRF RESULT: 1-1 DRAW REPORT: The Womens 2s had another great game! We started the game very strong and completely controlled the first two quarters! Both Frankie Birkenhead and Helen Busfield worked the ball nicely from the back to the forwards who created lots of chances on goal, we also even had a few attacking short corners, however, we didn’t manage to score in the first half. The 2nd half started at full pace with Bury beginning to challenge us, Leigh-Ann Worrall and Frankie both kept strong at the back with the help of Dani Sizer and Sally Rose. But, unfortunately, in the 3rd quarter Bury scored a goal after attacking strongly in our half of the pitch. We kept on going and managed to succeed with a goal scored by Mia Moore with the help of Emily Francis which allowed us to get the score up to 1:1. Everyone continued to work hard right up until the end of the match where Bury were awarded a short corner which would decide our result, Milly Hyatt's final save knocking the ball off the pitch meant that we were able to finish with a draw! Overall it was an excellent match where everyone gave their all, and although it was a shame to come away with a draw, it was a good practice and was great for everyone to be back playing hockey again. POTM: Milly Hyatt

WOMENS 2ND XI - 05/09/2020 VS HARLESTON MAGPIES 3 (H) TEAM: Womens 2nd XI DATE: 05/09/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 2nd XI VS 05/09/2020 HEADLINE: Another Match Complete LEAGUE: Friendly VENUE: TRF RESULT: 1-2 Loss The girls started off with a desire to go out and have fun, and that’s exactly what we did. The first half consisted of solid defensive work, however an early goal from Magpies pushed us to work that much harder. We were persistent to try and break through a tough press from the back using transfers across our back four. We kept our heads up after a 2-0 score at half time and came out that bit hungrier. Our forwards used their speed and strength to weave around congested areas which led us to a short corner. This resulted in a fast hard slap across goal from Niamh Campbell into the corner to make the score 2-1. We had finally found our feet in the last quarter where we tried to make a last push. With an unlucky call from the umpire while standing on the penalty spot about to shoot, we were unable to make it a draw and ended the score with 2-1. We were all pleased with our effort, just need to gain that extra aggression which some of us have lost through lockdown but will be unleashed again very soon. Well played everyone, with a special mention to our POTM Ellie Hobden.
