W (7-0) 17/10/2020 - W1 vs Cambridge South 1 (H / L) FOUR FROM FOUR FOR CITY AT HOME. |

WOMENS 1ST XI - 17/10/2020 VS CAMBRIDGE SOUTH 1 (H) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 17/10/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 17/10/2020 HEADLINE: Four from four for City at home. LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: HOME RESULT: 7-0 REPORT: Norwich City faced Cambridge South at home, it was as usual a bit rainy for the warm up. City current league leaders went into the match hoping to maintain their unbeaten run and increase their goal difference. Cambridge South were an unknown team holding 2 wins from 3 games. Thanks to Joby for videoing the game for us, we look forward to watching it back. There was a good crowd of supporters at the club (socially distanced of course) as the womens 2s had played before (and won!) and the men’s 1s were waiting to go on after (and win!). The first 20 minutes were played at a high intensity and City took an early lead after winning a short corner. The drag out went wide of the stick stopper Jo who instead picked the ball up strong and flicked it goal-ward for the first score of the match. The second goal came from Ellie Brine. The third was scored by Krystal with the assist from Stacey. The fourth was a reverse shot between the goalies legs by Stacey. The 5th and 6th were both Krystal. Krystal scored 3 fantastic goals and received POM nominations for this, she remains W1s top goal scorer with 14 to her name. All the City forwards put in a shift with some great runs and skills shown by Oli and Rosie. Flic, Micayla and Suze played fantastically at centre back stepping forward and distributing the ball well. Stacey’s characteristic skills drew compliments from the opposition and she fired home a well deserved final goal of the match, taking her season total so far to 6. There was lots of end to end play with City playing a more attacking formation and working hard to get back and defend when Cambridge South broke, half backs Hannah, Harriet and Ella put in good shifts up and down the line - check Strava for Harriet’s stats. The midfield comprised of Sophie, Jo and Alice worked hard to both move the ball forward and track back in defence. Jo received POM this week for interceptions and workfare in the middle. City although they conceded a few defensive short corners defended them well after some reinforcement in training and kept a clean sheet thanks to GK Milly Hyatt. Cambridge South were a competitive team who played with good sportsmanship throughout. Pies commented that at times we made things hard for ourselves, there’s always more to work on! Thank you to Caroline and Alan for umpiring. Final score: 7-0 League position: top, 12 points, GD of +27

W (7-3) 17/10/2020 - W2 vs Norwich Dragons 3 (H / L) FLICK, FLICK, FLICKS! |

WOMENS 2ND XI - 17/10/2020 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 3 (H) TEAM: Womens 2nd XI DATE: 17/10/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 2nd XI VS 17/10/2020 HEADLINE: Flick, flick, flicks! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: TRF RESULT: 7-3 Win REPORT: City began their mission today with a good structured warm up in the sunshine. Led by their very own warm-up guru Emily Francis who not only engaged City’s glutes but got them fired up for the game ahead. City started the game with a high press from forwards Milly Brown, Emma Hewitt and Rosie Humphrey, making a nuisance of themselves within Dragons’ defence, setting the tone. This allowed them to penetrate Dragons’ ‘D’ early which soon paid off as Rosie was awarded a penalty flick, she slotted it past the keeper to take City ahead, 1-0. City continued to put Dragons’ defence under pressure leading to another penalty flick being awarded! This time, Emily Francis stepped up who powerfully placed it in the bottom corner, 2-0. Dragons were able to turn the ball over quickly and weave through yellow and green shirts to get themselves on the score sheet before half-time, 2-1. Some words of wisdom from coach Chris Wardale encouraged City to go into the second half with much more determination than the first, as Dragons had ample time to get back in the game. Shortly after the restart, this is exactly what happened with an equaliser from a conceded short corner, 2-2. Working tirelessly in City’s Midfield, Emily Francis went into every 50/50 situation wanting to come out on top, linking nicely with Kate Houldey and centre half Georgia Cleveland who, as always, distributed the ball well out to half backs Helen Busfield and Sally Rose who were making dangerous runs up each wing. The ball fell to Rosie Humphrey who drove the baseline and pulled it back to Emma Hewitt who tousled with a defender in front of the keeper, converting City’s third, 3-2. Dragons were not prepared to give up just yet and shortly after equalised again, 3-3. City were NOT leaving the pitch empty handed. Captain Leigh-Ann Worrall and Hannah Nunn were bossing it in defence cutting out Dragons’ routes to goal. Helen Busfield upped the tempo, her teammates followed suit with some silky skills from Niamh Campbell, smart running from Mia Moore, great creative play from Ellie Hobden and with Sally Rose finding herself in acres of space penetrating the D saw a flurry of goals come from City within the last 10 minutes. Helen Busfield made it 5-3 with two effortless goals. A purposeful foul on Milly Brown allowed City to be awarded a third flick. Rosie Humphrey stepped up and calmly placed it in the bottom corner to make it 6-3. City were awarded a final short corner of the game which saw Hannah Nunn rattle the backboard, 7-3. Well done to all who played today including Sophie Turner on her return. It just shows with strength, determination and team spirit anything is possible. 💛💚 POTM: Rosie Humphrey

WOMENS 3RD XI - 17/10/2020 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 2 (A) TEAM: Womens 3rd XI DATE: 17/10/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 3rd XI VS 17/10/2020 HEADLINE: A Lovely Morning for Hockey LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: Dragons RESULT: 0-4 REPORT: NCHC womens 3s travelled the short distance to Dragons Den to face their 2s. For a change, it was a sunny start and a lovely morning for hockey. Visitors, City, came out of the blocks well and put up a good fight against Dragons. Inside forwards Lauren Lawrie and Jenni Czerwinski showed some superb skill, linking with the forward line, followed by some lovely runs by Emily Leeming. But the hosts were the ones to rack up a goal in the first half, deservedly so after some strong up front play on their behalf. City defended tirelessly in the second half and saw off countless short corners. Sabina Baker, Sally Richards and Mia Edmonds were a force to be reckoned with. Credit to Dragons for putting three more away in the second half, earning them a 4-0 home win. We send our players Marie Hood and Mollae Scott best wishes for a speedy recovery from their injuries!

WOMENS 4TH XI - 17/10/2020 VS LODDON 1 (H) TEAM: Womens 4th XI DATE: 17/10/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 4th XI VS 17/10/2020 HEADLINE: Fast paced and great game REPORT: LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Taverham RESULT: 2-2 For a dull and gloomy day it certainly wasn't a dull game! Fast paced from the outset. Heart rates up all round. First 15 minutes for City were energetic, lots of strong passing, great structure and form held. First goal to City, scored by Hannah Sangar with a cool and calm flick over the goalie! Shortly after Loddon made for a break and equalised, having a one on one with the goalie! Half time 1-1. Early on in the second half a great cross from Hanna Hall, ending well with a deflection into the left corner by Charlotte Jeffers, City taking the lead. Again Loddon fought back quickly making another great break and scoring to equalise 2-2. Despite much more back and forth, and fairly equal possession, play ended as a draw.

WOMENS 5TH XI - 17/10/2020 VS DEREHAM 4 (A) TEAM: Womens 5th XI DATE: 17/10/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 5th XI VS 17/10/2020 HEADLINE: A tough and competitive match LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 1 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Dereham RESULT: Loss 3-2 REPORT: This week Womens 5s played against Dereham Womens 4s and it was without a doubt a tough and competitive match! With 15 players we had lots of fresh legs allowing us all to do lots of running around. Unfortunately, for the first 10 minutes of the game we had yet to fully wake up and adapt to this team, resulting in 2 goals being conceded ; but our play definitely went up from here! Straight after this set-back we all played to our full potential, which was definitely noticeable. The second part of this half was much better as we worked more as a team, communicating and passing the ball using the back successfully when it was the best option. Our first goal was scored by Alice Marjoram in the first half. A lovely pass to her meant she could run straight into the attacking D. She then did an amazing reverse stick hit which went past the goalie and into corner of the goal! After this, we knew we could and were determined to get another goal. Throughout the game, lots of short corners were awarded to both teams, but City defence did a great job of defending all of these! The effort levels in the second half seemed to have increased even more and despite being 2-1 down, every City player was very enthusiastic and resilient. Our second goal came from a short corner ; the ball was injected by Emily Hicks to Alice, who hit a strong pass back to Emily. There was no easy opportunity for her to score, so she made a pass back to Caitlin Nicholson on the left of the D who took a lifted strike over the goalie’s hand. We all had a very enjoyable game! It brought attention to the things which we can work on, but also to areas where individuals and as a team we excel! Player of the match was awarded to Caitlin and the final score was City 2 Dereham 3.

WOMENS 6TH XI - 17/10/2020 VS LODDON 2 (H) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 17/10/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 17/10/2020 HEADLINE: First defeat of the season LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE:Taverham RESULT: L 0 - 2 REPORT: The team faced there first loss of the league games. The first half we faced a strong opposition who pressed hard in attack and secured a goal very early on. There was a lot of new positions in the team this week causing slight difficulties in defense, but City kept their head down and pressed on. With the sun directly in Joanne Di-Corpo's eyes the first half she did a stella job at keeping the goals out. Second half with help from coaches Ali Wardale and Alice Petch, we regrouped and focused on solidifying our defensive line. This worked well with no more goals getting in, and enabled us to press harder in attack. A few very close opportunities and a lot of possession in our attacking half made for a more satisfying end to the game. Although it was a loss today, the team did well to remain focused and composed against a strong opposition. Special mention to Eleanor Tomlinson who was voted POTM. She was amazing on defense and crucial and feeding the ball back into our attacking half. Noteworthy mention as well to Rose Byrne who again, played a pivotal role in feeding the ball wide and opening up game play. A few friendlies over the next couple of weeks will help to get us back on track and winning again!

W (6-1) 17/10/2020 - W7 vs Norwich Dragons 8 (A / L) ANOTHER WIN FOR CITY 7S |
---|
WOMENS 7TH XI - 17/10/2020 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 8 (A) TEAM: Womens 7th XI DATE: 17/10/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 7th XI VS 17/10/2020 HEADLINE: Another Win for City 7s LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 3 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Dragons Den RESULT: Won 6-1 REPORT:City 7s headed to Dragons for an early pushback. With a large squad and following a strong win last week the 7s were feeling confident. However, City started slowly and the strong Dragons midfield, experienced defence and good marking kept things even for a while. Some great work on the right from Freya Myhill and Scarlett Rhoades started to pay off and City began to create more chances. Our hard work in training was evident as City attacked the D from the sides as we have been practicing, rather than running straight at the to. It wasn't long before a strong ball into the D was calmly placed into the goal by Helen Lewis. Another goal followed after a great run from Lauren O'Hanlon and great passing between Lauren and Danielle Emerson which resulted in Danielle firing the ball past the Dragons keeper. Dragons were quick on the attack and some strong play from them resulted in a short corner which was deflected in by a very well positioned Dragons forward. City responded by working hard in midfield and working the ball out wide and into the D. A much deserved goal for Lauren O'Hanlon ended the first half 3-1 to City. We knew we could improve our composure and passing so came out in the second half determined to do better. Dragons remained strong and City had to work hard to deal with their counter attacks. Some excellent team work resulted in a further three goals from Helen Lewis, Helen McCall and Sarah Bird. Dragons kept fighting and City had to dig deep as a team to maintain possession and keep the ball moving up the pitch to keep creating chances and prevent dangerous Dragons counter attacks. Lots of players received votes for player of the match which reflected what a strong team performance it was. The overall winner was Scarlett Rhoades. This was very well deserved for some excellent play, strong passing and fantastic balls into the D. Well done Scarlett!

MENS 1ST XI - 17/10/2020 VS IPSWICH 1 (H) TEAM: Mens 1st XI DATE: 17/10/2020 FIXTURE: Mens 1st XI VS 17/10/2020 HEADLINE: Top of The Table Prem A Clash at Taverham LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION A VENUE: Taverham RESULT: 3-2 REPORT: The 100% start for Norwich and a similarly strong start for neighbours Ipswich meant that despite being only the 4th league game there was far more at stake than the standard 3pts. The game started cagey with both sides finding their feet on an unusually dry pitch given the last 4 weeks of downpours. Ipswich playing some longs ball in to the D and looking dangerous, City with a few chances of their own and holding most of the possession but both sides struggling to carve out any clear cut chances. Eventually Ipswich's persistence with the hits in paid off and with a deflection from the P-Spot and had the league. The lads kept their heads and continued to control play and made their pressure pay 5 minutes later. With City scoring their own version of the ipswich goal, Tom Harris playing a lovely ball in from the right to Harry Gill who arrived to deflect home into the opposite bottom corner. 1-1 HT. Similar strong start to the 2nd Half with Tom Cooke & Felix Broadway mopping up in front of the back as well as superb work rate from our outers (Stu wardle, Louis Preston & Ben chapman) all day to shut down any wide attacks. A Felix turnover from an ipswich hit led to a Cam Cooke counter, slapping into Harry Gilll at the P-spot from the left, in a symmetrical goal to his first one. We continued to force the issue and with our only short corner of the game, Tom cooke slipped to Cam Cooke who roofed a lovely flick past the Ipswich keeper who'd had a great day but had no chance to stop the attempt. A few more chances form Chris Wardale, Rafe Lochore & Ben Chapman came and went so the score remained 3-1. Ipswich put together a few phases of play including 4 Short corners that Alastair Cooke kept out. But with a poor touch and messy clearance they got an open hit from top D. Alastair got a pad to it but couldnt stop it. 3-2, 10 minutes to go. Tense last 10 including 2 minutes with 9 men but we defended resolutely, frustrated Ipswich and with a dash of Cam Cooke time wasting we had the 1 goal win. An amazing 2nd half of hockey, a huge 3 points in our promotion challenge this year, let's keep the streak alive!

MENS 2ND XI - 17/10/2020 VS PELICANS 1 (A) TEAM: Mens 2nd XI DATE: 17/10/2020 FIXTURE: Mens 2nd XI VS 17/10/2020 HEADLINE: A bad day at the office LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: Lynnsport RESULT: lost 3-1 REPORT: City arrived to a dreary & very wet Kings Lynn. With an Umpire down: Jason Hyatt commendably stepped forward to take control at 1 end of the pitch. The rain seemed to stop just before play commenced. City started brightly with good use of both Channels Resulting in a few short corners. Josh bailey & Joe Roy making some good runs from midfield. City went 1-0 down against the run of play. Kidner had a great run before finding Silvester at the P-spot,his sweep into the far left corner was Destined for a goal until a fully stretched keeper made full use of the wet pitch as he slid across to claw the shot away. A ball played into the D, Silvester latched onto it as he rounded the keeper only to be swept off his feet. P- Flick awarded. Jez Elliot happily obliged slotting away into the right corner game on. Gabs Marchant, Joe Roy & Jonty Black Were causing all sorts of problems with driving runs. Marchants run & shot hit the post only to bounce out. This unfortunately was a turning point not in City’s favour. Pelicans put a short corner away to make it 2-1 & followed up late on with a 3rd to make it 3-1. A frustrating day for a well disciplined City side.

W (5-1) 17/10/2020 - M3 vs Sudbury 2 (H / L) DESPITE INJURIES CITY SLAY SUDBURY |

MENS 3RD XI - 17/10/2020 VS SUDBURY 2 (H) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 17/10/2020 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 17/10/2020 HEADLINE: Despite injuries City slay Sudbury LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE: Taverham RESULT: Norwich City 3s 5 - 1 Sudbury 2s REPORT: Being present and in the moment doesn’t always correlate with 20/20 recollection so apologies to Matthew “Pies just the brace” Brine and Rees “just the tomahawk” Leonard, but play might have broken down at any second, so your scribe missed observing the amazing finesse which brought your cheers and adulation. I did however see Tom Hindle’s “make mine sound amazing” flick though…. But this story isn’t for finishes, however glorious, this is for the inglorious grafters, the deniers of oxygen. This is for the halves and the backs, the midfield and the, well, pretty much the whole team once we got our mojo going and defended from the front. Recovering from the ice bath (evidence submitted but failed the not-spitting-out-your-breakfast-latte test) and having reflected on the game, it’s as Simon “Blackie” Black accurately summed up - it started off OK… Now, I know I’ve written about this before, but whenever I see Mark Circuit make an appearance, I think thank God, we can all take 5 and put our feet up for a bit. Consequently, as he disappeared into sickbay nursing his nethers (or maybe just his hamstrings) we probably all thought, “oh merde, here come multiple sequential pressure waves but at least the occasional compression relieving long ball will be on, Adie…” At this point someone must have cut the oxygen from conscious thought to avoid further jinxing of our star grade line up. All I recall are flashes amid the maelstrom including Tom teasing Sudbury’s goalie with his highly calibrated flick cunningly disguised to look like the most average flick ever; the glee in his demeanour at the clunk of the backboard be-lying the potential of the big man to turn games and adding just a touch of despondency to the already desperate Sudbury. But it was our loss really, as the lights were out for Adie after the ill-judged tackle felled our titan of the base line and meant he had to join Mark for a really good mardle for quite a long time. Their spirit and presence seemingly spurred us on, as our pack of youths rose to the challenge, showing the tenacity and grit we had long been half expecting and hoping would flourish. Spurred further, no doubt, by the half time talk which Pies, having struck the gong, felt empowered to use to demand better service (something he’s never done before) and whilst all three leadership talks were somewhat predictable, they were necessary and on point. The usual jolly Saturday afternoon gathering thence erupted once more into hockey, composed at one beat then by fewer and fewer turns descended into the frantic, chaotic mayhem of the first half. And with Pies digging out more time and space than anyone bar Hawking thought possible and, snatching passing oxygen in the respite, we were up and off to a few more goals to 1. If we were to decide as a team to keep the work rate up for each other and keep our feet on the ground, who knows what quality of hockey we might play: anything seems possible, it’s just down to us to commit. Next week deep joy @Dereham?

MENS 5TH XI - 17/10/2020 VS IPSWICH 3 (H) TEAM: Mens 5th XI DATE: 17/10/2020 FIXTURE: Mens 5th XI VS 17/10/2020 HEADLINE: End to end battle LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 5 NORTH EAST VENUE: Taverham RESULT: 3-3 REPORT: NCHC Mens 5s played at home this week against top of the table Ipswich 3. The near perfect hockey weather saw a very quick start to the match. Within the first 5 minutes the ball had been up and back. With City missing out on a couple of early goals. The Ipswich defence held strong and a quick turn over saw them penetrate City’s defensive D and score. This riled up City 5s! The next 15 minutes saw a lot of good solid hockey from City. With numerous attacks at the Ipswich goal. The links between City mids and forwards tried long balls kept Ipswich on their toes. Some excellent long balls, short 1-2s and quick passing, all ended in either a City scoring attempt or pressured defence from Ipswich. Solid goal keeping from the Ipswich keeper, with numerous consecutive saves allowed them to maintain their one nil score line. In City’s defensive half, they were able to overcome each counterattack and slow down the flooding speed attack of Ipswich. The quick setup of Citys defence allowed for multiple options when playing the ball in from stoppages and kept the attacking pressure on Ipswich. Not long before the half time whistle City found the much needed equaliser and saw the game enter the break 1 all. An inspiring half time talk and re focus saw City come out of the block strong. With more linking through the middle of the field to the high forwards, City finally found themselves in front. 2-1. With constant pressure being applied, City kept Ipswich in their defensive half for most of the second half. Our defence held up when Ipswich turned on the attack. Once again, the quick set of City resulted in an excellent team goal. This was due to the crisp, quick, accurate passing. The ball was passed to at least 7 different City players before the sound of ball on metal meant City were in the lead 3-1. Unfortunately Ipswich did not give in. They kept on with their attack. They drove the ball through the centre of the field and a nice display of play kept them in the game 3-2, with just over 4 minutes of play left. Good game management and keeping a strong head, did not bode well for City. A few little but ultimately costly mistakes saw Ipswich level the game 3-3 with about a minute left. City pushed hard for the last minute but there was not enough time left and the game ended in a draw. On reflection City 5s had 60 minutes of outstanding hockey during that match. Some excellent ball movement, solid defence at all levels of the pitch and quick attacking options saw City in control for the majority of the game. Compared to last week a marked improvement, an increase in intensity, teamwork and work rate gave us a glimpse of just what City 5s can do this season.

City enjoyed good periods of pressure with Magpies mounting good counter attacks and it was from a counter attack that the visitors took the lead during the first half. James Dorling deservedly won player of the match with some excellent tackling to stall many of the Magpies attacks. After the break City enjoyed further periods of pressure with Dave Woodward scoring a brace, turning in a cross for his first and then applying a deft deflection to a short corner strike to deceive the goalkeeper. Magpies applied pressure at towards the end of the match and City were fortunate that Magpies squandered a couple of very good chances.
