WOMENS 1ST XI - 16/11/2019 VS HARLESTON MAGPIES 2 (A) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 16/11/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 16/11/2019 HEADLINE: City Lose to Local Rivals LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION VENUE: RESULT:0-3 REPORT: The Women’s 1s travelled to Magpies this week but failed to pick up any points after 4 weeks without a loss. City started the game on top and had the majority of possession. They continued to transfer the ball well across the pitch but a defensive mistake gave Magpies the lead after a shot from the top of the D ended up in the bottom right hand corner. Despite an effort to push on City quickly conceded a second goal. City were awarded 2 short corners in the first half but were unable to convert. In the second half City continued to turn over the ball in the middle of the pitch but were unable to combine enough passes to pressurise the Magpies’ keeper. City battled and worked hard until the end but against the run of play conceded a third and final goal. City look forward to next week’s match when they take on Dereham 1s at home in a 6 pointer game.

L (1-2) 16/11/2019 - W2 vs Watton 1 (H / L) CITY FALL TO TOP OF THE LEAGUE |

WOMENS 2ND XI - 16/11/2019 VS WATTON 1 (H) TEAM: Womens 2nd XI DATE: 16/11/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 2nd XI VS 16/11/2019 HEADLINE: City Fall to Top of the League LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: TRF RESULT: 1-2 L REPORT: As the first whistle blew, the sun was setting and not in our favour. Watton dominated the first half with two early goals, one being a deflection and one scored from a short corner. Niamh Campbell unfortunately got hit in the knee early on and Helen Busfield swooped in, picked her up and carried her off with one arm. I think everyone was astonished by her strength. Our defence was working very hard but Watton managed to get a few more shots on goal which were saved. Milly Brown had some good ball skills and ran up the pitch making a brilliant pass into the D where Rachel Mayne picked up the ball, manoeuvred it around the goalkeeper and scored a goal. This goal pumped up our adrenaline and by half time the score was 1-2. In the second half we dominated most of the game and Niamh, Helen, Rosie Ringer and Kate Houldey making some great passes into the D. We had many more shots on goal but their goalkeeper was good and their defence was strong. When Watton managed to get the ball up the pitch Frankie Birkenhead and Karren Dagless made strong tackles and won the ball every time applying good, constant pressure on the Watton attackers. The second half left us with a score of 1-2. It was a tough match but we all played with good spirit and determination. A big thank you to Rosie Humphrey coming to support her team even when she was injured.

W (4-1) 16/11/2019 - W3 vs UEA 2 (H / L) 4 GOALS FOR CITY 3S |
---|
WOMENS 3RD XI - 16/11/2019 VS UEA 2 (H) TEAM: Womens 3rd XI DATE: 16/11/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 3rd XI VS 16/11/2019 HEADLINE: 4 goals for City 3s LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Taverham (home) RESULT: 4-2 (win) REPORT: City came out of the blocks raring to go against UEA 2s and took an early lead when a shot from Liv Greenway was tapped in by Gabby Sharp on the left post. Both teams were fighting hard, and matched each other in pace, but City were making the extra effort to get to the ball first. Marie Hood was causing havoc in the middle and making the UEA defence work very hard. City had a succession of attacks on the visitors goal, with a number of shots on target, but were saved by UEA’s competent goal keeper. Unfortunately a quick counterattack on City’s defence meant UEA were awarded a short corner and equalised just before half time. The second half started with City being on the back foot as UEA formed another attack, which lead to their second goal. City were 2-1 down but were not done. With some fantastic passing around the back by Simran Rai and Jenny Brine, City stepped up their game and were determined not to give up. The work rate increased and City were soon rewarded for their efforts when a short corner was given. A quick ball injected to Hannah Bush at the top of the D was slipped left for a shot on goal and rebounded by the keeper straight to Liv Greenway, who slotted the ball home to equalise. City were now well and truly fired up. Gemma Sargent was working tirelessly at the back to fight off any threat of attack by the UEA forwards, slipping the ball right to Emma Richardson, who was on form and putting some cracking passes down the wing to player of the match Emily Greenway. Kim Cleave and Jenni Czerwinski had some great link up play in midfield when the ball was passed wide to Emily Greenway, who drove down the right wing and into the D, passing the ball to Hannah Bush, who was perfectly positioned to slap the ball into the backboard. Shortly after, Liv Greenway found herself in space and slipping the ball wide again to her sister Emily she ran around the back, passing the ball to Jenni Czerwinski, who finished with a cracking goal to close the score at 4-2. A thoroughly well deserved win for City after a superb team performance. Massive thank you to Louis Preston for stepping in as the bench coach this week and providing some very positive encouragement from the side lines.

WOMENS 4TH XI - 16/11/2019 VS BROADLAND 2 (A) TEAM: Womens 4th XI DATE: 16/11/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 4th XI VS 16/11/2019 HEADLINE: A game of back and forth LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Taverham - away RESULT: 1-0 to Broadland 2s REPORT: City played Broadland 2s away at Taverham and engaged in a very equal game. The first half consisted of opportunities in the D for City and Broadland but no goals were scored in the first half. In the second half Broadland scored a goal after some great defending and perseverance from city. Unfortunately, city were unable to get a goal back which resulted in a win for Broadland. Well deserved POTM to Mia Edmond for some great defending!

WOMENS 6TH XI - 16/11/2019 VS LODDON 2 (A) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 16/11/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 16/11/2019 HEADLINE: Balanced and enjoyable game LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Loddon RESULT: 0-0 REPORT: A balanced game which neither team dominated as the play moved end to end. High-quality umpiring and a good tempered atmosphere made this an enjoyable game as many home and away players remarked at the end of play. Despite numerous short corners at both ends, neither team looked dangerously close to scoring. Player of the match Sofia Hancy made some great runs and interceptions, neatly taking the ball out of contact and into space to make some great passes to her teammates. Captain Rose Byrne also displayed an impressive work rate, blocking Loddon's attempted balls through to their attackers and moving high up the pitch to ensure her team mates always had an available pass. A match without great incident but notable for city's press which thwarted Loddon's attempts to outlet from 16s.

WOMENS 7TH XI - 16/11/2019 VS CARROW 2 (A) TEAM: Womens 7th XI DATE: 16/11/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 7th XI VS 16/11/2019 HEADLINE: A Hard Fought Win for City 7s LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 3 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Langley RESULT: 2-1 Win REPORT: City 7s fought hard to secure a 2-1 win against a strong Carrow 2s side. A great strike from a short corner by Alex Woods put City ahead and a sneaky deflection from Sarah Bird doubled the lead. Carrow managed to score and looked dangerously close to equalising on a few occasions but City defended well and worked fantastically as a team to keep Carrow at bay. POTM Sarah Smith

L (0-1) 17/11/2019 - LF vs Ipswich & ES U14 (A / U14G T2 R2) SO CLOSE AND YET SO FAR |

FILLIES XI - 17/11/2019 VS IPSWICH & ES U14 (A) TEAM: Fillies XI DATE: 17/11/2019 FIXTURE: Fillies XI VS 17/11/2019 HEADLINE: So close and yet so far LEAGUE: U14 HA Cup VENUE: IESHC, Rushmere Hockey Centre RESULT: Lost 0-1 REPORT: The U14 Cup Team travelled down to Ipswich for a horribly early start, accompanied by a plethora of supporters and chauffers for the second game in their cup run. In fact, we travelled with so many vociferous supporters that our applauding and cheering drowned out any supposed home team advantage. Good job guys! On the pitch, we fielded a young, but exciting squad, who have all experienced playing in either Regional or National Finals at some stage and it showed, against an older, faster and more experienced squad. At no stage were the girls overawed or made to look second best. Once they got into the flow of the game they realised that they needed to defend and support each other if they were to still be in the reckoning at the end of the match. This tenacious spirit was best summed up by Emily, Rosie and Lucy in midfield, who put in tackle after tackle and ran their opposite number down, wherever they tried to hide. This never say die attitude was soon picked up by all the girls as they hunted in small packs to stop the faster IES girls. Behind the girls in goal, stood a resolute Sophia, who appeared to be re-enacting Gandalfs famous "they shall not pass" moment as she made save after save, with early decision making, good movement and strong ground work. Enough to earn her POTM. With 15 minutes left Alice managed to get an early shot off that pinged against the left hand post of a wrong footed IES keeper, then promptly span along the goal line and back into open play. Unfortunately our raucous cheering drowned out the umpires calling of "play on" and we had to accept that the game still stood at 0-0. A hard-luck moment reinforced by IES squeezing a topped shot in at the far post, minutes later. The fight was now on and with just 5 minutes remaining Rosie and Grace managed to combine twice to create two breakaway chances for our front line, but they just wouldn't go in. A sad result, for one of the most tenacious efforts that I have had the pleasure to see as a junior coach. Well done girls.

W (4-0) 17/11/2019 - LV vs Bury St Edmunds O35 (H / O35 T1 R1) ROUND 1 WIN! |

WOMENS MASTERS XI - 17/11/2019 VS BURY ST EDMUNDS O35 (H) TEAM: Womens Masters XI DATE: 17/11/2019 FIXTURE: Womens Masters XI VS 17/11/2019 HEADLINE: Round 1 Win! LEAGUE: Women’s O35 Masters VENUE: TRF RESULT: 4-0 Win REPORT: It’s that time of the year again, when the womens O35 team wonder if two matches in two days is still a good idea?!... Of course it is, we say now, while still buzzing from a 4-0 victory against a strong Bury team. The match started at a fast pace, with both teams keen to win an early advantage. City pressed hard from the whistle, with Emma Hewitt and Lydia Lawrence making some great runs down the wings, but unfortunately city couldn’t meet the crosses in front of the net. Suzy had a fantastic match as play maker in the centre, stopping everything and anything that came her way and created numerous chances going forward. The Bury defense struggled to clear the ball and it was Katie Gedge who scored city’s all important first goal just before the half time whistle blew. After a very encouraging team talk from Coaches Rosie and Serena, City went out ready to finish to the job. City continued to pressurise every Bury player at every opportunity, forcing them to Make mistakes. The second goal came 10 minutes in, with Carolyn Lumley, who smiled her way through the whole match, slotting home the ball from some great passing hockey as if we had been practising it on the training ground! Shortly after Elizabeth confidently took on the Bury keeper, calmly, collected ‘buried’the ball firmly into the net. 3-0. With spirits high and the goals flowing, City continued to attack and finished of the match with Emma Hewitt, a very welcome addition to the Masters team this season, with a perfectly placed shot, from the penalty spot. Every single player deserves a mention from their 1st round match. Anna Linsmith, made some great saves in the first half but clearly had everything under control. The back line of Fongy, Sally, Allison, Leigh-Ann and Frankie were as solid as a rock. Suzy, Alex, Ange, Katie and Hanna worked well together in midfield and Lydia, Emma, Elizabeth and Carolyn certainly proved to much for the bury defense with their natural attacking flair. Never any danger of it going to flicks, thank the lord! Bring on round 2!

MENS 1ST XI - 16/11/2019 VS CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY 1 (H) TEAM: Mens 1st XI DATE: 16/11/2019 FIXTURE: Mens 1st XI VS 16/11/2019 HEADLINE: Difficult Game the City LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION A VENUE: RESULT: REPORT: Match report City arrived looking positively at a game that had been marked for an important home win. The boys were fired up and warmed up well, looking forward to the game. Unfortunately this didn’t translate into a fast start and the students scored a lucky rebound early on. Two more short corner goals followed before a very lucky close range shot looped over the keeper and in. City addressed the issues at half time and came out hard, with Cameron Cooke testing the keeper on multiple occasions. The breakthrough came when Luie Corden won the ball high up the pitch and set up Felix Broadway who volleyed in. City can look back positively on the second half but need to do better next week in a must win at local rivals Dereham

With a number of key players carrying injuries and having to resort to having Pies on the bench for the first half, City played some of the best hockey of the season so far against a team that had a number of current or ex National league players. Magpies scored 4 scrappy goals with Ben Millet performing some great stops in the city goal from a couple of short corners. Norwich were never cut open and the defense were not in real trouble through open play but being undone by turnover ball. Champagne moment goes to Silvy for his chest high conversion of a cross from the left slotting the ball home. If we perform like this for the rest of the season City will be pushing for promotion.

A well-trained Ipswich team with a somewhat second sense of where their team-mates were at any given moment made it a hard task for our Norwich team to defend against, but this didn’t stop us from putting up a good fight. 2 goals were scored by Norwich in the first half but later to be taken away. Firstly, for not hitting the back board on the first shot of a short corner by Rees Leonard. Then secondly not being 5m away from the defensive player when the ball was coming down and knocked softly past the keeper and in to the goal after their player missed the ball. Overall an amazing match of hockey was played by both Norwich and Ipswich side but sadly came to a 2-0 loss for Norwich.

We conceded 3 goals with a spell of poor man-marking. Towards the latter part of the first half Joe gathered the ball on the edge of the D and crossed it to Ethan Rushton who reversed it into the bottom right corner. In the second half we greatly stepped up the performance and hit them hard in the first 20 minutes, unfortunate to find the second goal we conceded 2 more goals, one of which was a good long ball through the middle for their winger to deflect it in. Special shoutout to the birthday boy Joe Konieczny, who was unlucky(ish) to convert his penalty flick hit straight at the keeper. The game ended 5-1 but was a close game in terms of effort and possession.

COLTS XI - 17/11/2019 VS SAFFRON WALDEN U14 (H) TEAM: Colts XI DATE: 17/11/2019 FIXTURE: Colts XI VS 17/11/2019 HEADLINE: Supportive win LEAGUE: Cup Tournament VENUE: TRF RESULT: Win 8-0 REPORT: Just a quick note today on the performance this afternoon which at 8-0 we have to celebrate coming as it did through teamwork, sheer graft and good decision making. The scorers had plenty of opportunities to finish and with composure made it, mostly, look easy. Given the supply and creativity of the team we had chances aplenty and, mostly, passed well to stick or thoughtfully into space. Our resilient defence put in a shift showing great courage when the dominance of our midfield area faltered, if it ever did. And finally, well, a clean sheet is always to be treasured. Well done particularly to the younger players who lifted their games and proved their worth in this team by demonstrating their potential. To see them play so well, looking like it was their inalienable right to play on this pitch and in this team was the highest accolade we could ask for and I hope we squared our objectives away as coaches in this regard. The key to unlocking further success in this tournament will come in the next 6 weeks by continuing to play and enjoy the sort of hockey that we played today. Let’s not take anything for granted, back to the coal face on Tuesday!

L (3-4) 16/11/2019 - MD vs Harleston Magpies (H / L) ENDED ON A HIGH |

MENS DEVELOPMENT XI - 16/11/2019 VS HARLESTON MAGPIES (H) TEAM: Mens Development XI DATE: 16/11/2019 FIXTURE: Mens Development XI VS 16/11/2019 HEADLINE: Ended on a High LEAGUE: NORFOLK DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Taverham RESULT: NCHC 3 - Harleston 4 REPORT: This game was going to be a test of nerves for City Devs with Magpies looking ready and prepared to go, warming up with a buzz of confidence. Both teams started off well with end to end play and in doing so making several chances. Most of the play was very concentrated in the midfield so short sharp play into space was required and an even, well fought battle ensued between the players. Magpies over time were more consistent with their basic space awareness style of play which lead to them taking the lead. With persistent pressure against City and making more mistakes, Magpies created more chances and in doing so winning short corners which lead to two more goals making it 0-3. Into the third quarter City kept playing well and worked hard on their basics of pass and move, creating space and communicating positively, eventually a short corner was won with some lovely passing into the D. This ended the third quarter with a penalty corner goal and we were starting to turn the tide and confidence crept in. Being 1-4 down by then we realised that the last quarter was going to be a ‘give it everything and leave nothing behind’ but keep to what we discussed from the start, moving into space, keep our shape, be positive and constructive. This is where City have to take self pride from the game because the last quarter was an incredible display of determination, skilful play and team work. Working together City dominated the Magpies team leaving them to replace their young players with another adult to try and stop the constant and endless attacking play which lead to two more City goals as penalty corner after penalty were won. City Devs were beaten on the day but I can honestly say they will take away a very positive attitude from today’s game into the next. Well done chaps.
