MENS 3RD XI - 01/04/2023 VS DEREHAM 2 (H) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 01/04/2023 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 01/04/2023 HEADLINE: A good draw to end the season LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: Taverham RESULT: 2-2 REPORT: For the last game of the season, Norwich hosted Dereham who were near the top of the table. Dereham had some early pressure and created good chances, forcing Tom Franks to make an excellent save to his left hand side. Unfortunately, Dereham deservedly took the lead mid way through the first half. Norwich grew into the game and equalised when Ethan Rushton scored a tap in after the ball came back off the keeper. At half time the score was 1-1 and Norwich went into the second half focused on composure and simpler hockey. Before Norwich got fully going in the second half, Dereham found a way through again and Norwich went 2-1 down. City didn't give up and Mark Fletcher made it even at 2-2 with a well placed lifted slap into the top left. In the final minutes, Dereham increased the pressure and won several penalty corners but Norwich defended strongly and held out for a well-deserved draw. It was a good performance to end the season and at least Norwich stopped Dereham having a chance of promotion

MENS 3RD XI - 25/03/2023 VS NEWMARKET 1 (A) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 25/03/2023 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 25/03/2023 HEADLINE: Hard fought victory LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: Newmarket RESULT: Norwich City 3s 3-2 Newmarket 1s REPORT: The match started with even pressure being applied from either team, with city having more of the possession to begin with. Midway through the first half some nice open play led to max being able to get a clear shot on goal with Corey deflecting the ball through the keepers legs to score city their first. City’s defence worked really hard to keep out some promising attacks although Harry may have taken the words “use your head” a little too literally. Taking his place came a very enthusiastic Tom who was instantly on scene chasing down the attack too much so that he pulled a muscle. Pretty much down to 10 men city took to the field for the second half and not long after saw a well played ball through, the back down the middle of the pitch to max who was able to put a ball through to Corey who beat the keeper to secure the 2nd goal with a nice reverse stick finish. Shortly after, some well applied pressure won city the ball just after a Newmarket pushback, and James stepped up to chuck an aerial over 2 defenders to Corey who was able to control the ball and slip it under the keeper to get him his hat-trick and city their 3rd. Playing with 10 tired out the defence and in the last 5 minutes Newmarket were able to win a short and a nice play from them scored them their first. Newmarket won a short seconds before the final whistle and in the last play of the game put the ball away for their 2nd. Well played all Final score 3-2 Man of the match - Corey Rushton

MENS 3RD XI - 18/03/2023 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 1 (H) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 18/03/2023 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 18/03/2023 HEADLINE: Plucky display ends in creditable loss LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: Taverham RFC RESULT: Norwich City 3s 0 - 3 Norwich Dragons 1s REPORT: With a few of the regular 3s players receiving the big call up to play for the 2s this week, the 3s welcomed some new faces into their midst featuring: a 3s debut for Ellis Byland-Brookes, returns for Andrew Bell and Nathan Corden, and a return for Tom Cooper who last graced the 3s with a match away in deepest, darkest Kettering. City's opponents were league high-fliers Norwich Dragons 1s. In the away fixture earlier in the season, a poor spell of 5 minutes had led Dragons to capitalise and score 3 goals which led them to take the victory. After a rousing pre-game speech by Captain/Coach/serial traveller Simon Black, City felt inspired to go out there and give it their all. Eagle-eyed Tom Hindle spotted Black eating a jacket potato in his hand whilst talking to the team (wait for the match teas Hindle, keep your mind on the game!) Both teams started well, but it was Dragons who repeatedly tested the City defence of Clive Crichton, Corden and Adam Sayer. Courtroom strongman Tom Franks in goal kept City in with a chance making some superb saves, and performing such displays would would warrant an appearance in the EDP. Hindle and Sam Hancock provided an outlet for the defence and moved the ball well across the pitch, linking up well with the forward line of Matthew Brine, Bell, Byland-Brookes, Mark Fletcher and Dan Jeffers. Despite this, and the valiant efforts of the defence it was Dragons who opened the score line following up on a well saved shot from a short corner. Not to be deterred, City continued to deny Dragons and the half ended 1-0 to Dragons. With rewed vigour and feeling refreshed, and Hindle still thinking of that jacket potato), City were determined to get a goal and make it tough for Dragons in the second half. However, a massive spanner in the works was thrown in when Dragons scored again! How inconsiderate of them! A short corner, which was initially cleared resulted in the ball being given away on the 23 line, a crash ball ended up being deflected into the air, falling to the waiting Dragon forward, who smashed the ball into the back corner despite keeper Frank's efforts. City kept their heads up and after some lovely link up and attacking play won themselves a short corner. However, it was not meant to be and Dragons kept the ball out and soon resumed their attacks on the city defensive line. Within the last 10 minutes, after a succession of short corners, Dragons finally scored, taking the score to 3-0. City saw out the rest of the game and cleared a short corner in the last minute of the game. A tough match against a strong opponent who are looking for promotion, but despite this, City really gave them a good game and they had to work hard for their goals. Well done to all who played and especially those who stepped up from the 4s. Player of Match: Adam Sayer.

MENS 3RD XI - 04/03/2023 VS UNIVERSITY OF EAST ANGLIA 2 (A) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 04/03/2023 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 04/03/2023 HEADLINE: Unbeaten run extends to 6 games, but only just LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: RESULT: REPORT: Norwich knew this fixture was going to be tough, and with a depleted squad and some guest appearances thrown in, City’s unbeaten run looked in jeopardy. City found themselves under pressure right from the start, with UEA pressing hard into the Norwich half, it appeared like it was going to be a long afternoon. Composure was needed, and composure was presented. Although the hosts mustered multiple chances, the team held firm making it to half time 0-0. HT 0-0. UEA started the second half similar to the first, creating chance after chance but could not find a way through the Norwich keeper. Finally, on the 51st minute, a break away goal enabled the hosts to go 1-0 up. Jubilation for the students, who would now surely go on to take further goals and consolidate their lead. Alas, it was not to be. Five minutes later, Mark Fletcher brought us level. Norwich had a second chance. If the equaliser wasn’t a miracle in it’s own right, the next goal would be. Only two minutes later, Norwich took the lead with Corey Rushton smashing past the UEA keeper. Scenes of utter disbelief shook the pitch. Norwich now had some breathing space, albeit the smallest of margins. And that breathing space left the us not long after, with a nice deflection from a short corner finding its way into the top of the net, UEA drew level at 2-2. As the game drew to a close, special mentions ought to go to the Norwich defence and keeper who played out of their skin to keep City from losing this game. All in all, a solid team performance where Norwich can say that got something from a game that looked so far away from them. FT 2-2. Player of the match: Tom Franks

Although missing some of the regulars, City welcomed back Tom Hindle and Matthew Fretwell back into the mix. Sudbury started strong, breaking regularly into the Norwich D but couldn’t quite summon a finish worth noting. As the game settled, City grew in confidence and began to break Sudbury down. With chances at both ends, it was Norwich who took the lead with a fine Richard Silvester deflection, beating the keeper. HT 1:0 With the game restarting, Sudbury came straight out pushing for the equaliser and didn’t have to wait long. Smashing home from close range, the visitors got level and the game was thrown wide open. With chances now coming at both ends, it was City keeper Tom Franks earning his match fee. Alongside the Norwich defence, the home team remained firm and with a superb break away goal from Jack Luther, City took the lead to make it 2 – 1. As the minutes ticked down, Norwich saw the game out. There were some tense moments at the death with a couple of short corners on the final whistle, but Norwich held on and gained another three points. Today’s result means it is five wins in a row for the 3s. A fine run of form just at the right time to help City stay in this league. FT 2:1 Player of the match was Tom Franks

MENS 3RD XI - 04/02/2023 VS BURY ST EDMUNDS 2 (H) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 04/02/2023 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 04/02/2023 HEADLINE: 3 wins on the bounce LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE:Taverham RESULT: Norwich City 3s 8-1 Bury 2s REPORT: On the 5th February, Norwich city Mens 3s took on higher placed Bury Mens 2s in an attempt to move further clear of the relegation zone. The home side started brightly, with Corey Rushton and Mark Fletcher providing early pressure to the Bury back line. Toby Pallister created the best of the chances early on, when his wonderful skills in the final third, culminated in a shot, well saved by the keeper. On the 17th minute, Max Wilson broke the deadlock, putting the hosts 1-0 in front after good counter attacking play by city. However, Bury responded well, with a goal of their own one minute later. A period of good pressure from city after conceding, resulted in a series of short corners, with the first excellently put away by Jeremy Elliot before a second was put away by Mark fletcher at the far post after a goal mouth scramble, giving city a 3-1 lead at half time. City began the second half as they finished the first, with good link up play between the defensive and midfield lines. The hard work was rewarded as Jeremy Elliot scored a fabulous solo goal to add a second to his tally. Some good defending from screens Max McEwan and Jim pallister, and solidity throughout from the back three, saw off Bury pressure midway through the second half. As the game moved into the final ten minutes, city were able to utilise their youthful midfield and attacking lines to inflict further damage to Bury, with three goals in quick succession courtesy of a further two goals from Jeremy Elliot with the later scoring his fourth after a well work short corner routine, and a powerful Jim pallister strike a minute before full time, giving city an impressive 8-1 victory. With three wins on the bounce, city are beginning to move away from the relegation battle in a hope to finish the season on a high.

W (3-1) 28/01/2023 - M3 vs Norwich Dragons 2 (A / L) CITY YOUTH TAME LOCAL DRAGONS |
---|
MENS 3RD XI - 28/01/2023 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 2 (A) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 28/01/2023 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 28/01/2023 HEADLINE: City youth tame local dragons LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: Goals, Norwich RESULT: Norwich Dragons 2s 1 - 3 Norwich City 3s REPORT: Fresh from their demolition of fellow strugglers North Norfolk last week, an even more youthful City side travelled to and quashed local rivals Dragons 2s in an entertaining encounter full of beguiling skill, electrifying pace and pinpoint passing. City's youth was highlighted when, 18 year old player of the match, Toby Pallister was heard to utter the words "I feel old, I'm the 4th oldest person in our team" (Jim, Jack and Tom being the only over 18s in this 14 person squad). City immediately took control and had already come close with a couple of efforts before Toby converted a penalty corner in the 3rd minute to make it 1-0. Such was City's dominance in those early stages that it was astonishing they didn't add to their lead despite two very good opportunities. Somewhat against the run of play a good and fast move down Dragons' left from Harry Bal, led to an equaliser in the 10th minute. Despite City asserting consistent pressure it seemed to be looking like one of those days where they could do everything but score. With Max McEwan delivering a master class in the defensive heart of midfield, Oli Millett, Max Wilson and Toby Pallister provided a delightful exhibition of dazzling stick skills and insightful passing. As if to show that the senior players remained influential in the game, a fine tackle by Jim Pallister, saw his pinpoint pass find Toby who shared a delicious one-two with Max Wilson before scoring his and City's second. Half time 2-1. In the second half City nullified Dragons' key attacking threat (Bal) with Archie Ward essentially marking him out of the game. City remained dominant, despite the occasional Dragons attacking foray, and penalty corner opportunities. With Alvin Muthi providing a pass and move foil to Wilson, Pallister T, and Millett's stick skills there were plenty of goal scoring chances that were well saved by local keeper (Ives), scrambled away by the defence, or passed agonisingly wide of the uprights. From a defensive perspective it is delightful to see 3 young defenders remain so controlled and calm throughout a game. As the game entered the final 10 minutes Jack Luther pounced on a rebound from his penalty corners strike to make it 3-1 and allow City, despite all their pressure to breathe a sigh of relief and play the final minutes in relative comfort. Whilst this was essentially a bottom of the table clash, both teams played periods of genuinely excellent hockey with neither umpire needing to have words with any of the players - a testament to the players and officials alike.

W (9-3) 21/01/2023 - M3 vs North Norfolk 1 (H / L) NORWICH YOUTH TAKE CENTRE STAGE |
---|
MENS 3RD XI - 21/01/2023 VS NORTH NORFOLK 1 (H) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 21/01/2023 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 21/01/2023 HEADLINE: Norwich Youth take centre stage LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: TAVERHAM RESULT: NORWICH CITY 3s 9 - 3 NORTH NORFOLK 1s REPORT: A good crowd on a gloriously sunny Taverham afternoon witnessed a demonstration of near perfect hockey from a very special group of young players. The team, boasting 9 players aged 18 or under, simply demonstrated time and time again the art of fast attacking hockey allayed with excellent decision making. The fact that the team scored 9 goals from open play highlights just how fluid and incisive they were. Corey Rushton, fresh from his player of the match performance last week, continued his fine form with goals in the 14th and 17th minutes, the latter thanks to delightful build up play by Oli Millett and Toby Pallister. Somewhat against the fun of play, a break down their left saw North Norfolk reduce the arrears in the 18th minute. Undeterred Jack Luther made it 3-1 in the 21st minute following poetic build up play between Sam Hancock and Max McEwan. Almost immediately Max McEwan then made it 4-1 in the 22nd minute following dazzling stick work by Max Wilson and brilliant decision making by Jack Luther on the baseline. After a relatively quiet 5 minutes Max Wilson scored arguably the goal of the game purely for its simplicity. Henry Baker took a quick 16 hit following a North Norfolk penalty corner, his pass found Luther on the right who drew a defender and released Max Wilson to slot past the hapless keeper - from defence to goal in less than 5 seconds - brilliant. On the stroke of half time a mesmerising dribble from Oli Millett set up Luther to make it 6-1. Despite some creative substitutions City continued to dominate the second half with Maw McEwan and Toby Palliaster really catching the eye in midfield and the visitor's defence bedazzled by Wilson and Millett's silky stickwork. After 40 minutes Mark Fletcher, having missed a glorious chance just moments earlier, made it 7-1 when he tapped in at the far post following yet another splendid build up involving Wilson and Pallister. Whilst City were dominant North Norfolk continued to pose a threat on the counter attack particularly through ex-City youngsters, Austin Kennard and Jonty Down, With Tom Franks making a number of telling clearances. A good deflection reduced the arrears to 7-2 which soon became 7-3 in the 59th minute. However, an excellent interception from Toby Pallister in the final third saw him hammer the ball into the roof of the net. Wilson completed the scoring with 3 minutes left on the clock via yet another stylish midfield build up. Any match report where the home team scores 9 is going to be dominated by the goal scorers however, what was most pleasing throughout the whole game was the professional manner in which all the City players just got on with the game. The defensive trio of Ben Hawes, Henry Baker and Archie Ward looked and played with composure beyond their years. As you can tell, selecting a player of the match from so many excellent performances was always going to be tough, with Max Wilson just edging out Toby Pallister, Max McEwan and Corey Ruston in the votes.

The home team started out the game with some very promising attacks with city not quite adapted to the way each other play. Felixstowe scored 3 before halftime with city having some promising chances but none of which were put away. Into the 2nd half the team was learning more and more how each other plays, however Felixstowe were able to score their 4th goal not too long after the halftime break. City came back strong with a great ball across from the left side, with Dan taking a deflected pass to his right past the defender to Corey who hit the ball under the keeper and into the goal to gain city their 1st. Felixstowe battled back to score again bringing the score to 5-1. However city were not quite done with a great ball from Harry to Corey who was able to get a decent shot away forcing a save to Matthew Brine who was able to capitalise and put the ball in giving city their 2nd. Felixstowe continued their pressure and were able to score again bringing the final score to 6-2, some good individual performances with plenty to work on. With a number of good performances from City’s youth production line, Corey Rushton was named player of the match

MENS 3RD XI - 07/01/2023 VS DEREHAM 2 (A) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 07/01/2023 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 07/01/2023 HEADLINE: Pipped at the post LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: Dereham RESULT: City 3s 3 - 4 Dereham 2s REPORT: A youthful City side, boasting 9 players 19 or under played some tremendous hockey to severely test an experienced Dereham 2nd team. City had much the better of the early exchanges with the midfield of Max Wilson, Max McEwan and Alvin Muthi coupled with intelligent runs from the forward line of James MacKenzie and Richard Silvester creating some good chances. City opened the scoring when a quick clearance from Simon Black found Max Wilson who ran more than half the length of the pitch beating no end of Dereham midfield and defenders before clinically shooting passed the bedazzled keeper. An uncharacteristic turnover from the otherwise dependable Sam Hancock allowed Dereham to level the score almost immediately via a rapid break away. Dereham then took the lead in the 22nd minute only for City to turn the match in their favour with two excellent goals, one from Wilson and the other from Richard Silvester. 3-2 at half time. In response to a dazzling first half for Max Wilson Dereham restructured at half time and packed their midfield in an attempt to negate wizard Wilson. Curiously this did not limit Max’s impact on the game but seemed to lead to others wanting to dribble into contact rather than reverting back to the effective pass and move tactic that reaped such rewards in the first half. As the half progressed City remained dynamic in the middle quarters of the pitch but seemed to lack a clinical edge in the final quarter. With Mark Braybrook becoming more and more influential as the game wore on it was no surprise when the home side levelled the scores thanks to a well place penalty corner shot inside the right hand post. Despite resolute defending by City’s back 5 (Ben Hawes, the increasingly mature Henry Baker, Adam Sayer, Simon Black and Archie Ward) Dereham’s break away tactics did call upon Tom Franks to make a number of fine saves, including tipping a couple onto the cross bar. Whilst a draw would have been a fair result, Dereham took all 3 points with a late, and well worked penalty corner. City’s player of the match was Max Wilson, with Tom Franks a close second.

MENS 3RD XI - 26/11/2022 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 1 (A) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 26/11/2022 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 26/11/2022 HEADLINE: Youth development looking bright LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: Dragons RESULT: Norwich City 3s 0 - 3 Dragons 1s REPORT: The Norwich City Third Team travelled away to Dragons First Team with a young side. Playing a new formation the young team coped well with the dragons side. Alvin Muthi was always dangerous down the right hand side as were the City forwards of James Mackenzie, Dan Jeffers and Corey Rushton. Corey could even have put Norwich City ahead if it had not been for a fabulous save from the Dragon’s Keeper. Dragons hopeful long and aerial balls were easily dealt with by the experienced back division of Simon Black, Jason Hyatt , Adam Sayer and the not quite so experienced Ben Hawes. Tom Franks, who had been expecting to have to pull off a few special saves was hardly tested at all. Sadly in two minutes of madness just before half time. Norwich conceded possession in their own half and conceded two soft goals. The second half was much the same as the first with Dragons struggling to deal with our young team. The quick hands or Harry Morgan, Charlie Hutchinson, Kieran Shapcott and Sam Hancock always creating difficulties for dragons and Norwich controlled much of second half. Norwich did concede a controversial third shortly before the end of the match. The result did not reflect the play and although the Norwich Team probably didn’t deserve to will the 3-0 score line seems a little harsh. It was a very good performance again one of the top sides in the league.

MENS 3RD XI - 19/11/2022 VS HARLESTON MAGPIES 3 (H) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 19/11/2022 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 19/11/2022 HEADLINE: So near yet..... LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: Taverham RESULT: City 2 - 3 Magpies REPORT: Sometimes you just want to celebrate and marvel at the combination of the ageless experienced heads and skillful dynamic youth that pervade throughout our glorious hockey club. Our squad for this 3rd from top versus 3rd from bottom fixture included 3 silver tops (O50s), 7 U18s, and 4 somewhere in between!, including our latest debutant, 14 year-old James Mackenzie. Our visitors, Magpies, had a combination of 20-40 year-olds plus a couple of older teenagers. From the outset, the contrasting styles of the teams was apparent. Magpies opting for quick passing triangles and running off the ball with a zonal defence whilst City chased and pressed when defending throughout the pitch and used their stick skills to drive at their visitor's defence in a blur of hand and ball that are well beyond the wildest dreams of your scribe and erstwhile 3rd team leader, captain Black. Magpies started the better with City's back 5 (Jim Pallister, Max McEwan, Sam Hancock, Ben Hawes, Henry Baker and Simon Black) and ever-dependent keeper, Tom Franks being called upon to blunt a wave of white and black attacks, including one particularly fine save. Having weathered the initial storm City's midfield and attack started to dominate led by the Tesla powered guile of Max Wilson, the intelligent and emerging talent of Charlie Hutchinson and the ever-smiling Mr. Versatile himself, George Brine. As more and more circle entries came, City generated a number of half chances and penalty corner opportunities thanks to Mr. Brine senior, Mr. Silvester and Mr. Luther. Whilst it was pleasing to see players really focusing on getting 'outcomes' from circle entries it was a little frustrating not to turn the penalty corners into goals. As is the way with close, hard fought games, Magpies then scored after 20 minutes as a result of a goal line scramble following second phase ball after a penalty corner. Undeterred, City pressed forward and levelled the score just 5 minutes later with a combination of fine play down the left (Sam Hancock), excellent decision making at the top of the D (Charlie Hutchinson/Jack Luther) and a clinical shot (Max Wilson). Sadly, Magpies regained the lead almost immediately when they pounced on turnover ball inside their own half and quickly transferred it to the wing, back inside and then unselfishly slipped for a clinical and well executed goal. HT 1-2. The second half continued in similar vein with the home side creating numerous penalty corners and half chances but to no avail whilst Magpies' pacey counterattacks were in the main calmly dealt with by City's pitch-wide defensive efforts. As the half wore on both sides were guilty of a few clumsy / competitive (but certainly not malicious) stick tackles that resulted in cards but neither side could push home their extra player advantage. In their efforts to capitalise on their attacking dominance, City became victims of trying to beat one too many defenders when perhaps a pass could have (would have?) been the better option. With five minutes to go Magpies made it 3-1 from a penalty corner. City's never say die attitude came to the fore as they won a penalty corner on the stroke of time which, City's player of the match, Max Wilson converted from a very tight angle. Nurturing and supporting this fine group of youngsters (and others throughout the club) should mean the future of the club remains bright.

The first half saw some close chances for both sides with City’s back four of Ben Hawes, Simon Black, Henry Baker and Sam Hancock as well centre half Jim Pallister playing a vital role in keeping the score at 0-0 going into half time. Going into the second half, both sides continued pressing to find the opening goal, with an upfront pair of Richard Silvester and Mark Fletcher creating chances which were well kept out by the UEA defence. Inside forwards Henry Ashcroft and Ollie Millet, produced great efforts in midfield against a youthful opposition, with the later using his pace and skill to cause further problems towards the end of the game. His hard work was rewarded when he deflected in a Mark Fletcher shot with 10 minutes left. The team continued to defend well as the clock ran down, however, the persistent UEA side managed to convert a vital short corner at the back post, with Jim Pallister claiming confidently he was not to blame for the goal during match teas. In the end, the team had to settle for a frustrating yet well deserved 1-1 draw.

Keeper Seb’s performance in goal was outstanding, skipper Simon ‘s green card: not as much. Considering the task we faced, the team played very well, getting better as the game went on. Charlie had a great game in midfield, Jason was calm and collected in midfield, and Sam was combative and creative at left back. Despite the loss, it was a performance we can take positives out of, and a performance we can be proud of. Well done lads!

MENS 3RD XI - 29/10/2022 VS IPSWICH 2 (H) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 29/10/2022 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 29/10/2022 HEADLINE: Table toppers thwarted LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: Taverham RESULT: City 1-0 Ipswich REPORT: In a classic top (Ipswich) versus bottom (City) clash this game proved that nothing can ever be taken for granted where sport is concerned. City having narrowly lost their first four league games whilst their visitors arrived with a 100% winning record and an average goal per game surplus of 6. City started strongly with the midfield combination of Jim Pallister, Max McEwan, and Oli Millett linking well with the ever-young Richard Silvester leading the forward line. Whilst City by no means had it all their own way in the opening exchanges, they certainly defied the pre match league table positions. Having failed to convert a couple of penalty corner opportunities City were then thankful for the truly mercurial, nay, majestic keeping of Tom Franks, resplendent in ‘Dutch’ orange for the day. An uncharacteristically errant pass from Simon Black at the back created a perfect two on one (Franks) opportunity. Ipswich took advantage to unleash a thunderbolt headed for the top right corner only for that man Franks to nonchalantly pat the ball away without a care in the world. City, through Harry Ingham (if only he was available every week), Archie Ward (ditto) and Sam Hancock clinically transferred the ball from one flank to the other to provide telling through balls for the intelligent leads of the front line, Silvester, Mark Fletcher and Dan Jeffers. Throughout the half Silvester and towards the end, George Brine proved to be the scourge of Ipswich’s defense. With City defending intelligently and with total accountability from the front to the back, they were able to limit Ipswich to just a handful of chances, all of which were blocked or brilliantly saved by the irrepressible Franks. Half time: 0-0. Given the quality all over the pitch in the first half it was obvious that this game would be settled by the narrowest of margins. City, again started well with Archie Ward, Sam Hancock, Kieran Shapcott and George Brine really coming to the fore. Midway through the half Ipswich thought they we going to take the lead when a crisp shot looked destined for the far corner, but you’ve guessed it, that man Franks held firm and simply parried away the danger. Ipswich must have felt it was just going to be one of those days when one of their attackers said ‘your keeper’s having a blinder’ (or words to that effect). With most of the play being focused between the 23m lines the tenacity and hard graft of City’s midfield (Millett, McEwan, Pallister, Brine, Shapcott, Hancock and Ward) supported by the tireless running of Jeffers and Fletcher meant Ipswich were limited to a handful of meaningful attacks. With just four minutes to go a fine interception on City’s left was swiftly turned into attack with a delightful through ball to Silvester in the inside left channel. He jinked, he drove, he entered the D, and unleashed a fine low shot to break the deadlock – the players, the crowd (yes, we even had one of those!!) were elated. Of course, four minutes can seem a very long time and allowed Ipswich one final attack, only for that man Franks to tip a low shot onto his post and away to safety. To a player, City never stopped battling and whilst Ipswich might feel a draw was the very least they deserved, we had Silvester’s composure and accuracy in front of goal and the unbreakable orange force field known as Tom Franks in our goal.

MENS 3RD XI - 22/10/2022 VS NCHC M4 (H) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 22/10/2022 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 22/10/2022 HEADLINE: Fantastic club day Friendly VENUE: Taverham RESULT: 2-3 REPORT: In a glorious sunny Saturday morning a combination of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th teams pkayers combined to provide a highly entertaining and good quality gane. The score line didn’t really matter as the aim was to provide a good challenge for a large number of our excellent up and coming youngsters. It was great to see “families” Brine, Ingham and Morgan out in full force! For the record the “away” team lost 3-2 with young Charlie Hutchinson tapping in at the far post for the away team’s first and the ever young Peter Morgan converting a nice corner variation for the second.

MENS 3RD XI - 08/10/2022 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 2 (H) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 08/10/2022 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 08/10/2022 HEADLINE: Sunshine frustration LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE:Taverham RESULT: Norwich City M3s 0-1 Dragons M2s REPORT: City started their latest league encounter in fine style with Adam Sayer, Harry Ingham and George Brine combining beautifully to turn defensive positions into dynamic attacking opportunities. Dan Jeffers and Andrew both coming close inside the first 20 minutes. Dragons’ counterattacks were by and large dealt with by Jim Pallister, who yet again had an excellent game, Tom Franks, City’s keeper who is in the form of his life, and the defensive quartet of Sayer, Ben Hawes, Sam Hancock and the ever young Simon Black. As the half wore on both sides created half chances but lacked a clinical edge to break the deadlock. As the second half progressed City appeared to edge the balance of play with Cameron Hansell and Alvin Muthi making telling contributions. Given the secure nature of both defences and the absence of clear cut chances it was no surprise that the deadlock was broken by a somewhat scruffy if well struck goal. An innocuous if bouncing ball bobbled past two defenders and was smashed through Franks from close range - nothing the keeper could have done to prevent the goal. Whilst City pressed for the equaliser Dragons defence and energetic midfield held firm City’s player of the match was Simon Black

MENS 3RD XI - 01/10/2022 VS NORTH NORFOLK 1 (A) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 01/10/2022 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 01/10/2022 HEADLINE: Seven goal thriller LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST VENUE: Sheringham School RESULT: City 3 - 4 North Norfolk REPORT: City got off to a good start scoring in the first 20 seconds thanks to a good shot by Andy Bell which was followed up by Mark Fletcher. As the half continued North Norfolk continued to attack well and scored two goals including one tap-in following an excellent run by ex City youngster, Austin Kennard (great to see him back of a bad leg break last season) to make it 2-1 at half time. City dominated after the break and justifiably equalized when Fletcher roofed the ball into the net. However City were caught almost immediately after levelling the score when turnover ball gifted North Norfolk a great chance which they gleefully accepted to make it 3-2. City continued to persevere and it was no surprise when the scores were levelled thanks to a good run and cross down the left by Jack Luther that was expertly deflected in to the goal by Oli Millett. As the match entered it's last minutes North Norfolk won the ball and progressed up the pitch to score a deflection in the last minute of the game. Final score 4-3 to North Norfolk in a good spirited evenly contested game. Ed Beake continued his remarkable start to the season just beating Jim Pallister and the excellent Tom Franks to the award for City player of the match (his 4th such award in 6 matches).

MENS 3RD XI - 17/09/2022 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 2 (A) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 17/09/2022 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 17/09/2022 HEADLINE: City youth sparkle FRIENDLY VENUE:Dragons RESULT: City 3s 1 - 0 Dragons 2s REPORT: City started extremely well with good passing from debutant Ben Hawes, Sylvie and Ed and led to a good attack down the right hand side but it unfortunately came to nothing. City continued to attack with alot of short corners but could never find the back of the net. City continued to play well in the middle and on the right side with tackles from Alvin and Ben. Sam made some good runs on the left and right which led to much more short corners but still City couldn't execute them. The first half ended 0-0. As the second half started there was good passing across the middle by Ed and good dribbling by Fletch and Sylvie which led to more short corners but still City couldn't execute the shorts. But with a quick break and a good ball through Dan was able to slot one past an offset keeper to make it 1-0. But with 3 minutes left Dragons had a drag flick at the top and it forced a good save by George and one off the line by Simon which saved City from a draw and the match ended 1-0 Norwich. Special mentions for debutants Ben Hawes and Kieran Shapcott who both had excellent games and the more established teenagers Ed Beake (player of the match), Sam Hancock, Oli Millett, Henry Baker and Alvin Muthi

MENS 3RD XI - 10/09/2022 VS WATTON 1 (H) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 10/09/2022 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 10/09/2022 HEADLINE: Good natured test LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST VENUE:Taverham RESULT:Cuty 6-2 Watton REPORT: Norwich 3 started well. They dominated possession keeping the ball with good accurate passing. Norwich gave Watton no respite when they did up possession the Norwich midfield pressed winning the ball back with ease. The Norwich pressure led to an early goal. Alvin Muthi moving forward at pace slapped a diagonal cross field pass at the left post for a diving Ethan Runton who deflected into the goal. After a little blip when Norwich allowed Watton to score Norwich reasserted control and scored 4 more goals before half time including a pile drive from Matthew Brine. I was hit so hard that the keeper clearly didn’t see it. The heat played its part in the second half with the energy dropping out of the match. Norwich stretched their lead before conceding another consolation. Great performances from Alvin Muthi in his first match for the club and Sam Hancock

As the match continued Bury kept their press and with good pace down the right hand side led to their second goal. The first half finished 2-0. City however, started the second much better and with interlinking play around the back by Adam, Simon, Jason and Ed led to an attack down the right hand side and with good play by Kit and Ed City had a strong attack down the right which ended with Boycy tomohauking a roofed goal which put City back into the match.
