D (2-2) 23/03/2019 - W6 vs UEA 3 (H / L) END TO END BATTLE WITH UEA |

WOMENS 6TH XI - 23/03/2019 VS UEA 3 (H) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 23/03/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 23/03/2019 HEADLINE: End to end battle with UEA LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE:TRF RESULT:2-2 REPORT:Although safe from relegation, Norwich City were keen to play well this week and end the season on a high. A young, fit UEA had some skilled players who tested City and won a series of short corners but thankfully failed to score. City launched frequent counter attacks and their efforts were finally rewarded with the first goal of the match when Lucy Wimhurst sent a pass into the D which bobbled but was deflected by Julia Marchant. Unfortunately, despite an amazing penalty flick save by Norwich goalie Joanne Di-Corpo, UEA equalised soon after to take the game into 1-1 at half time. UEA dialled up the pressure in the second half with a pair of fast, lead attackers breaking through several times and threatening to score. Eventually, the pressure applied by UEA paid off for the visitors when they scored 20 minutes into play. City kept their cool and were rewarded with a goal from Georgie Bowett, who subbed into right midfield and almost immediately netted a pass from Jess Ball. Not quite the win they were after, but all the same City were delighted to take home a point from their last match. A challenging season, with frequent squad changes and injuries has left City loitering near the relegation zone. However, a positive team spirit and great leadership by captain Rose Byrne means City will stay in the same league next season.

D (1-1) 09/03/2019 - W6 vs Loddon 2 (A / L) CITY PLAYED SOME GOOD HOCKEY - BUT FRUSTRATING LAST MINUTE EQUALISER FOR LODDON |

WOMENS 6TH XI - 09/03/2019 VS LODDON 2 (A) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 09/03/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 09/03/2019 HEADLINE: City played some good hockey - but frustrating last minute equaliser for Loddon LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Loddon Hobart High School RESULT:1-1 REPORT: A determined City upped their game this week as they met one of the teams at the top end of their league. The first half saw a well-drilled Loddon launch wave after wave of attack, including too many short corners to count. But the attacks were thankfully mopped up by the defence, helped by an impressive performance from captain Rose Byrne patrolling the centre ground and some great saves from the cool-headed young keeper Sophia Colman playing her first league match for the club. City broke frequently launching their own attacks into Loddon's D and 20 minutes into the first half, City's hard work paid off with a goal. Much-missed Josine van den Berg, now back from injury, sent a powerful ball to striker Amy Hinchcliffe who moved it on to a well-positioned Louisa Sizeland who netted the ball. City went into the break one nil up, but knowing they still had a tough battle ahead. The match changed in tone in the second half, with City more in control and the play moving up towards Loddon's defensive end. City won several short corners but unfortunately failed to finish them. Then, literally as the whistle went, Loddon's dangerous striker who had threatened throughout the match, broke through and put the ball in the net with a couple of seconds of play left. City were gutted, but still pleased with their performance and delighted to win a point.

WOMENS 6TH XI - 02/03/2019 VS PELICANS 3 (H) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 02/03/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 02/03/2019 HEADLINE: Scoreline doesn't reflect City's performance for most of match LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE:TRF RESULT:0-5 REPORT: City conceded an early unlucky goal but managed to hold off a strong Pelican's team through the first half and went into the break just one nil down. The home team came out fighting and determined to keep Pelicans at bay and score one back - a strategy which appeared to be working as Pelicans failed to find the net and City had lots of play in the offensive D and several short corners. Unfortunately, they couldn't find the equaliser although it felt as if the game could turn at any minute as City began to push forward. However, towards the end of the second half, City momentarily lost their shape and rhythm for a crucial five minutes - and paid the price. A youthful Pelicans took full advantage and hammered in four goals in quick succession, leaving a disheartened City unable to pull the scoreline back.

Some excellent passing and linking of their midfield secured the win. The only goal of the match was scored in the 33rd minute when Holly Lloyd took the ball from midfield and dribbled into the D, and her subsequent cross was quickly put into the goal by Louisa Sizeland. POTM Emma Guyton worked hard in defence, supported by another strong performance by right half Alice Petch. Broadland kept the pressure on throughout though with some last minute scares for NCHC which they managed to defend.

However, Dragons began to press and eventually took control of the game in the second half as City found it hard to combat the persistent pressure. The goals came when Dragons took back possession of the ball from a City 16 and took it straight back into the home team's net. The second goal was a breakaway goal after City unfortunately turned the ball over immediately after they won a short corner.

A short corner came around 10 minutes after push back with Lucy Wimhurst netting the ball for Norwich taking the team one-nil up. City continued to push but Dereham gradually gained control of the match, moving play down the other end of the pitch and instead putting the City defense under huge pressure. Dereham then maintained a high press which kept the ball in City’s danger area and with their strong attacker breaking through, City unfortunately succumbed to four goals from the home team.

WOMENS 6TH XI - 17/11/2018 VS LODDON 2 (H) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 17/11/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 17/11/2018 HEADLINE: Tough match for new 6s line up LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: TRF RESULT: 0-4 REPORT: Team squad changes across the club, and a few regulars not available today, meant that City 6s headed on to the pitch with a completely new line up. The first half was tough as Loddon attacked the circle hard and City struggled to keep them at bay meaning that the home team went into the half time break three-nil down. With a win looking a challenge to achieve, City decided to take a deep collective breath and play their own game - aiming to settle into getting to know each other as a new team. The strategy worked with City performing a little better in the second half, breaking through more and only letting one goal past the keeper. City had several attacks on the circle, but they were mopped up by Loddon. A tough match with much to learn but positive signs moving forward with this new squad.

WOMENS 6TH XI - 20/10/2018 VS LODDON 2 (H) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 20/10/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 20/10/2018 HEADLINE: Tough but lots to learn LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: TRF RESULT: 1-4 REPORT: This friendly match saw City field a mix up team of half and half 6s and 7s players, one five's player in centre midfield and a junior keeper playing her first adult women's match. Loddon arrived with a strong team, so it was a tough match for City. Loddon made wave after wave of attack and knocked City off the ball when they tried to head back towards the opposition goal. However, despite the score line, City played well and began to get a measure of Loddon in the second half, staying stronger and pushing up more. Eventually, City broke through and a long ball from right midfield to the left wing was crossed in and netted beautifully by Jess Borges. Loddon continued to attack mercilessly but were mostly held at bay on the line by an amazing performance from junior keeper Sophia Colman, who was voted player of the match.

L (1-3) 13/10/2018 - W6 vs Herlings 1 (A / L) OLD-SCHOOL HOCKEY ON A GRASS PITCH WAS A TOUGH BATTLE FOR CITY 6S |
---|
WOMENS 6TH XI - 13/10/2018 VS HERLINGS 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 13/10/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 13/10/2018 HEADLINE: Old-school hockey on a grass pitch was a tough battle for City 6s LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: East Harling Recreation Ground RESULT: 3-1 loss REPORT: Herlings are the last women's hockey team in Norfolk who still play their home games on grass, making it a tough match for City 6s. Many team members had never played on grass before and took a while to adjust to how the ball bobbles over the stick or comes to a halt when it hits a tussock. With a sloping pitch, play also naturally gravitated towards the bottom of the dip, making most of the attack against City come up the left side of the pitch in the first half. It was a case of forget slapping and instead just whack the ball as hard as you can up the pitch and hope somebody will get on the end of it - or not! City played incredibly well in the first half, holding off Herlings relatively easily. With such a tough surface to play on and Herlings playing a long-ball game from 16s, it was harder to launch a neat passing attack and City's game was mainly defensive. However, eventually a nice triangle of passing between Josine Van den Berg, Julia Marchant and Amy Hinchliffe saw Amy score. The goal from player-of-the-match Amy, on her first game back after a nasty hand injury, gave City a one nil lead into the break. It was tougher after half time as Herlings were awarded repeated short corners. Their whack-it-up-the-pitch game was increasingly effective and eventually saw Herlings score three goals in the second half, against an exhausted City. City had played well, albeit defensively in the second half, but were undone by bobbling balls, hard-hit 16s, the unpredictability of grass and a sloping pitch where the ball disappeared several times into the undergrowth and the umpire had to call for a new ball!

D (0-0) 06/10/2018 - W6 vs Broadland 3 (H / L) CITY HAD BEST OF PLAY, BUT UNFORTUNATELY COULDN'T FIND THE NET TODAY |

WOMENS 6TH XI - 06/10/2018 VS BROADLAND 3 (H) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 06/10/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 06/10/2018 HEADLINE: City had best of play, but unfortunately couldn't find the net today LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: TRF RESULT: 0-0 REPORT:City started at a high-energy and positive tempo, playing well and passing the ball up the pitch to create repeated attacks on the Broadland defence. However, an agile Broadland keeper foiled most attempts and unfortunately several other great City strikes narrowly missed - hitting the crossbar or going just millimetres wide. Luck wasn't on City's side today but they held their nerve and pushed the ball high up the pitch repeatedly. Throughout the game City played well as a team as well as individually, with everybody giving their all - as the spread of names of team members nominated for player of the match testifies. Norwich continued to have the best of the play throughout the whole match but just couldn’t find a much-deserved goal, repelled by the Broadland defenders who won several 16s then fired the back down the other end of the pitch. City responded well by (wo)man-marking out Broadland’s high attackers to keep their goal safe from long balls attempting to find a high player. Midfield, together with some great work from the half-backs, also cut out several of these long and hopeful Broadland balls and sent them back up the pitch again. Meanwhile, full backs Emma Guyton and player-of-the-match Karen Paterson both had notable games, mopping up any dangerous-looking balls. After impressively stopping a goal on the line last week, Karen Paterson was on full power again today, timing her tackles well, winning back the ball and sending it safely off the line or to a team member. Goalie Helen Lewis also had a great game, making some crucial, much-appreciated saves when called into action. All-in-all an exciting, high-tempo game, with City having by far most of the play - but happy that they hadn't conceded a goal against the run of play. Both teams went home with a point, and agreed it had been an enjoyable and good-tempered game.

WOMENS 6TH XI - 29/09/2018 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 7 (A) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 29/09/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 29/09/2018 HEADLINE: Mother and daughter goals help give City 6s another win LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Dragons Den RESULT: 4-2 REPORT: Norwich 6s gritted their teeth, jigged their formation to be more defensive and headed into the first 10 minutes at Dragon’s Den one player down! The team had turned up knowing they would need to play without a sub and with just the bare 11 , but unfortunate delays meant one player was unable to get there for push back and a last-minute sub couldn’t arrive until well into the first half. A few phone calls reassured the team that support was on the way so it was a matter of holding fast until then. Thankfully, City rebuffed any dangerous attacks and with 11 eventually on the pitch and an unexpected bonus sub on the bench, began to make wave after wave of attack on Dragon’s D. City's attacking play soon paid off when Julia Marchant deflected in a pass to take City ahead and Sarah Smith scored a second, hitting it neatly past the defenders and keeper to find the net. Dragons soon responded and began to press high up the pitch until they eventually pulled a goal back. Player of the match Emily Leeming made some amazing runs on the right wing and her hard work eventually paid off with a powerful strike to score City's third goal. Dragons threatened to equalise and throughout the match the lead never felt safe. The opposition launched repeated attacks on City’s defense with Dragon Bridget LeGood soon scoring a second goal for her team with a power shot from a short corner. Norwich struggled to hold their 3-2 lead in the closing stages of this exciting match, but Dragons looked increasingly dangerous. Thankfully, Maddy Smith made a supercharged run up the pitch, heading into the centre of the D and powering in an impressive ball just over the line. Much to the relief of the rest of the team, this secured a second win in two league games for City and a mother and daughter set of goals for the team. Final score 4-2 to Norwich. Player of the match was Emily Leeming, but Maddy Smith came in a tight second with votes needing to be recast a couple of times to work out who was the winner as both Maddy and Emily had played so well.

WOMENS 6TH XI - 22/09/2018 VS DEREHAM 4 (H) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 22/09/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 22/09/2018 HEADLINE: Strong team ethic helps City 6s to win first league match of the season LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Taverham RESULT: 3-1 REPORT: With team spirit and energy high, the first league match of the season saw City 6s play some lovely passing hockey . From the start, a positive-minded Norwich dominated the match, repeatedly moving the ball towards Dereham’s goal. The first goal came from a short corner with Josine Van Den Berg, firing on full throttle today, powering in one of her signature power-pushes into the corner of the net. The whole team worked tirelessly to create a constant overload for Dereham’s defenders and mop up any of the few breaks the visitors made. Josine played a crucial role in the next two goals as well, scoring another from a strong push and assisting in a third, when a strong ball into the D was deflected by Julia Marchant. Player of the match Maddie Smith, playing an inner, impressed with her energy and strong passes as did newcomers to the team Emily Leeming on right wing and Kelly Bolt in midfield. Emily, playing her first game of adult women’s league hockey, made several fantastic runs up the right wing, outpacing and eliminating defenders and winning chances on goal for City. Dereham had a couple of good crosses sent in, but luckily for City, they failed to get a player on the end of them in the D. Impressive tighter marking from Alice Petch and the defensive-unit in the second half, also gave Dereham less options to get a ball away in front of City’s goal. However, despite some great defending , Norwich conceded a goal via a short corner to Dereham to leave the final score 3-1 to City. All looking promising for the rest of the season.
