Fitness Training
A series of 3 fitness sessions have been held and were very well received
by those that attended. The sessions were run by Mike Utting, a sprint coach
from City of Norwich Athletic Club and he spent sometime working on technique
and provided a variety of different exercises. Consideration is being given to
running some similar sessions over the winter break.

Club Day - 31 August
Club day will take place on Sunday 31
August at Taverham. You will need to arrive at 10am for a 10.30 start and
the event wil run until approximately 5pm.
The
format will be pretty much as previous years with the event open to all Club
Members, male and female, aged 13 years and over. Attendees will be split into
squads of equal strength for a tournament. This has proved a very enjoyable
event over previous years and is a good opportunity to get together before the
season starts in earnest. It is also an ideal opportunity for new and
prospective members to see the club in action. The bar will be open
all day and there will be the usual barbeque. This is a very enjoyable
occasion and is a great opportunity to meet other club members and play some
hockey in preparation for the new season.
There
will be an opportunity for the mini’s to play a short match in the middle of the
day.
This
year we will also be using club day as an opportunity to belatedly present
Player of the Season trophies to the junior age groups for last season.
As
usual Pies and his team will be masterminding the event, organising the barbeque
and hopefully the weather. If you would like to attend either e-mail clubday@norwichcityhc.co.uk or
advise either your team captain or one of the following;

Get Back Into Hockey
During June/July the club in
conjunction with Active Norfolk ran some "Get Back Into Hockey" sessions
aimed at beginners and players that had not played for a while. There were a
hardcore of half a dozen players that attended these sessions run by Paul Gallop
and assisted by Oli Oxbury who are now continuing their attendance at regular
club sessions. A couple of these players will shortly move to the Ladies
1st/2nd XI sessions.
Hewett School
By now you should all have received details of the Hewett School project
and have received details of the questionnaire we have asked club members to
complete. If you have not yet replied then please do so asap. It is vitally
important that the committee receives as much feedback as possible in order for
an informed decision to be made on whether to participate in the project.
New members needed
With the loss of one or two players to university, moving away and
retiring we are looking to recruit some new players. If you are aware of new
players moving into the area or know of players from other clubs that are
looking for a new challenge, then please make every effort to introduce them to
the club. If they need a little persuading then please pass their details onto a
club member so that we can contact them.
Ladies 4th's and Development
teams
Last season we sucessfully created the Ladies Development XI last
season, which played the majority of it's matches season mainly thanks to
the excellent organisation of Morag Dawkins one of the parents and the support
from Paul Gallop and John Grange. This team gave the opportunity for many under
15 girls and 2 or 3 over age players to play competitive hockey with some
as young as 11 participating. Next season some of the girls that played in
the Development XI will be too old, so that we can provide them with a
continuation of competitive hockey and so that we have a suitable team for some
of our newer Ladies we have decided to enter a Ladies 4th XI
into Division 3 of the Martin & Acock Norfolk League. At present we do
not have a captain for this team but hope that another parent will step forward
to help with the organising. Any volunteers should speak to either Ali Wardale
(01603 812216), Paul Gallop (07786 390108) or Morag Dawkins (01603
401695).
Umpires Level 1 Course
20 club members attended a Level 1 umpiring course in may and passed the
theory element. They are now undertaking their practise matches. Any team
captains seeking umpires for pre-season friendlies should contact Paul Gallop
(07786 390108) who will be able to provide details of the club members that are
seeking to complete their practise matches.
Men's Trial matches - 6
September
This season the men will be holding trial matches on 6 September, 1's v
2's, 3's v 4's and 5's v 6's so that there is a clearer idea of the abilities of
players and in which teams they should be playing. We hope to be able to
play all these matches at Taverham, pitch slots permitting.
Coaching Opportunity
The Norfolk Hockey Association is still keen to hear from any qualified
hockey coaches who may be interested in being involved with the Junior
Development Centres and haven't already been in contact. These are paid
positions and anyone interested should contact Karen Young, the Hockey
Development Officer, e-mail: karen.young@activenorfolk.org Tel: 01603 697022
Mob: 07827308998.
Olympic Hockey
Don't forget that there is lots of hockey on TV
at present with both the GB Men's and Womens squads in action at the Olympic
Games. Most matches can be seen live on BBC Interactive. You can also see
video highlights on the BBC website.
NCHC Under 9's - National Youth Festival Team of the
Tournament
Norwich City Hockey Club U9 returned from a
national tournament acclaimed as the best team. Forty U9 teams from all over the
country met at the Yazoo National Youth Hockey Festival in Nottingham, to end
the 2007/08 season. Norwich scored 7 goals conceding only one. In doing so they
beat the much fancied Leicester and ended Bournemouth's 54 game unbeaten run!
The festival was well supported by a large and noisy contingent of parents,
rallied under an enormous banner to cheer on the Norwich boys and girls. Teams
were asked to get into the Olympic spirit and represent countries taking part in
the Beijing Olympics, with Norwich representing Kenya. Coaches dressed up in
tribal costume and the Norwich players took the field carrying authentically
decorated shields and presented opponents with African necklaces. While strictly
at U9 level there is no formal national competition, when taking account of
performances on the pitch, together with entering into the spirit, Norwich City
were awarded the trophy for the 'Best team' by the judging panel from England
Hockey.
The results: WON 4-0 Rover Oxford, WON 2-1 Bournemouth, Drew 0-0
Lichfield, WON 1-0 Leicester. The Players, aged between 7 and 9 were: Fred
Anthony, Jake Cushion, Sabina
Illing, Harry Ingham,
Kieran Peters, Sam Patterson, Flo Allen, Anna Tighe, Thanks go to their
inspirational coaches John Ingham, Al Paterson, and lead coach and tribal chief Stuart
Peters".
